Page Appearance

For the past few days,I’ve been having problems posting blogs. The place where I enter is covered in some places by the sidebars to publish and add tags. I have no idea what I’ve done, but I can not move them. Even the menu bar above the entry box is squished. Any help you can give me on this would be appreciated! Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It would be good if we could see the blog so we could check out what you mean. Remembering to post the url to the blog in question when you post in the forum is one way to go. Another way is to link your blog to your username

It’s very easy to do. Here’s how to link your username to your blog in your blog Dashboard –> Users –> Your Profile. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ and fill in the address of your blog and then click ‘Update Profile‘.

Once you’re done click “Update Profile”. Voila! Now every time you sign into the forum we can all click on your username and your blog will be linked to it. And every time you leave a comment on a blog your username can be likewise clicked and your blog can be instantly located.

What is the blog url starting with http://

It’s not on my blog though, it’s on the page where you enter the blog itself. Where you type in the blog, publish, add tags page. All the other pages are fine.

It’s not on my blog though, it’s on the page where you enter the blog itself.

Every webpage has a URL. It is dispalyed in your top brwswer bar and every webpage’s URL starts with http://

When we ask others to help they need to be able to view the webpage we are referring to and that means we must post the URL. When we do that the other person can usually answer the question the first time they post rather than having to post repeatedly asking for the URL.

Please post webpage URL for the page to which you are referring. :)

I wasn’t sure if it would show, since that particular part you have to sign in to view. If you notice, the sidebars on the right are covering up some of the middle. The text disappears behind the sidebar and is difficult to view to proofread or change. Also the tabs at the top of where you enter text isn’t like it used to be.

I think I may have changed a setting by accident. My new laptop is smaller than my first one, and I’ve accidently hit keys before, changing settings in Word and others. That could be my problem.

Any help you can give me is appreciated. :)

We cannot view the post in question as it has not been published and made publicly visible. Was this text copied and pasted from elsewhere? If so then that could have caused this problem. For example copying and pasting from microsoft WORD is problematic.

If that’s what you have been doing, rather than typing directly into the editor, then on the lower toolbar in the editor, there is a “paste from Word” icon. Click on that, paste the stuff from word into the window that appears, and then click the “insert” button and it will strip out all the non-HTML code that Word tries to put in.

Pasting directly from Word will, it not right away, get you in the end and your blog will break on you. Then it becomes quite a job to find out just what broke things so that you can fix it. Basically, Word does not speak web (HTML).

That’s exactly what I’ve been doing. I had no idea it would cause a problem. Is there any way I can get my blog back to the way it was? Some kind of restore?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not clear if you mean
    (1) you have been copying and pasting from WORD and using the technique I described above
    (2) or you have been copying and pasting from WORD and NOT using the technique I described above.

First, before you do anything else, go to your Settings->General page and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML”. Then go in and edit each post, from most recent backwards until the front of the blog (the part readers usually see) suddenly fixes itself. You dont’ have to make a big edit, just change something to Italic or add a comma or anything small. Then Update. That should fix the code errors.

Report back if this helps with your dashboard problem. We’re getting a lot of people complaining about dashboard problems recently; if you can give us your browser and version, it would help.

Yay! raincoaster. I forgot about this :(

  • Unknown's avatar

OOPS! It’s actually on the > Settings > Writing page.

I’m using Mozilla Firefox, you think it could be a compatibility issue? I updated it recently.

  • Unknown's avatar

Never mind, it’s not a compatibility issue. I have two WordPress blogs. I just checked the second one and the dashboard is normal.

  • Unknown's avatar

In fact, if this helps, I pulled up both dashboards and looked at them side by side. On the one that’s not working right, the font size is bigger than on the one that is working right.

Sounds like you have zoomed in with your browser. Try command (control) 0 to reset it to normal viewing.

That worked! Thanks so much! I’m trying to get used to this smaller keyboard!

    @soonergirl
Did yoy follow raincoaster’s advice and change the setings on your writing page to: “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML”. If so, what was the result?
