Page attribute module

I’m a WordPress newbie, but have built websites using other software in years past.

The full page attributes module does not display — only “templates” and “order” but not the instruction assigning parent/level/linkages. This is a brand new website; I have it limited to private viewing at present, but will happily grant anyone access if they think they can solve this. It seems so elementary, but I cannot figure out how to do it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • How many pages do you have? If it’s the very first page you’re creating that option won’t show as there isn’t another page to be it’s parent.

Otherwise I have no idea why it isn’t showing the missing field in the module (try clearing your browser cache and cookies if you haven’t yet), but an easier way to set page rank and order is to set up a custom menu. Then you’ll be able to re-order pages and create child pages simply by dragging and dropping them where you want. The custom menu will also allow you to add tooltips and create unclickable parent tabs if you want a parent tab but not actually have a page linked to it. You can set up a custom menu under Appearance ->Menus in the dashboard. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

If you’d prefer to still use the page attribute module, could you try pasting a screenshot of what you see? You won’t be able to post an image directly in this thread, but I usually use http://snag.gy/ and it works quite well.

I built about two dozen pages, but was only able to link the home page to the About page, both of which had been created natively. When I built my pages, I published them to PRIVATE since I was still playing around and didn’t want the Internet to watch this work-in-progress. At one point, I was building them quickly and forgot to publish them to PRIVATE so they were PUBLIC for a half hour or more. At about that point, when I went in to change them to PRIVATE, I noticed that the “Parent” section had been restored and so I happily hit the drop down menu — where I hit another problem: some of the pages were there, but others weren’t. Apparently there is a fixed limit to the number of pages that display in that drop-down. If I can link these to another “parent” perhaps that will clear that list; it’s my next project. Then, finally, the (free) template I chose insists on displaying all the pages. I’m hopeful that this problem will be solved as I assign them to different parents since the one that IS linked displays properly in a drop-down menu from the parent. I did try clearing the browser cache, but if there was an effect, it did not appear over an hour’s delay.

Thanks for your helpful suggestion to build a custom menu. I’ll investigate that option. I REALLY appreciate your assistance.

  • I think the problem is that you have certain pages set to private. Options for private pages could be different from the options for public pages.

Seeing as your entire blog is currently set to private you don’t need to set individual pages to private as well – your entire blog is currently hidden from view. Make sure that all your pages are set to public and that they are all published, i.e. not drafts, and that should make all options available to you.

An additional note regarding the custom menu: If you have pages you want to be able to link to, but not have them appear in the menu, you can do that as well with the custom menu. You publish the page as usual, but when you set up the custom menu you remove those pages from the menu. That way they will still exist online, but you will only be able to reach them through a hyperlink or if you know the page URL, but not via the menu.

Oh, I have so much still to learn. Thanks for shortening that learning curve. I’ve been catching up on e-mail and RSS feeds since awakening (EDT) this morning. I will be turning my attention shortly to the website project and, again, REALLY appreciate your constructive instruction. Many thanks.

  • You are very welcome :)

It’s always a pleasure helping someone who describes their issue clearly and use the correct terminology.

Your suggestion of changing to Public solved the problem. I was then able to organize the menu completely and THAT solved the menu display problem in the CSS navigation bar. I won’t bother you further, but to ask if you have a thought on why the Pages widget seems to refuse to organize in the order of the Menu. All the pages are there and all arranged in order WITHIN each parent tree, but the three parent sections are not properly ordered. I tried Page order and then Page title (which I thought might work because the three parents are, coincidentally, to be displayed in alpha order. I don’t know what Page ID is, so I didn’t try that. Any quick thoughts? If not: again, thanks for solving my problem. I have to run out for several hours now so I won’t be available to work on this until mid-afternoon, FYI.

  • No bother at all. I’m not that familiar with the pages widget, not using it on my blog, but I quickly added it to my test blog and there it worked fine. I can’t think what’s causing a problem your end.

A general observation around widgets: After changing a widget setting, save the widget, and if you have the blog open in another tab, refresh the page after saving the widget for any changes to become visible. Failure to save and then refresh might make it appear as if changes aren’t taking place.

Here is a link to the relevant support doc, for what it’s worth: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/pages-widget/

I’ve worked my way through this, discovering that the template allows only one menu; that’s fine. So I created a second menu identical to the first and it renders fine in the default location, but still no change in the Pages widget. I’ve just posted an appeal to the community. Oh, and I had done the save and refresh properly, but, of course, tried again. What, again, is the definition of insanity?

Yes, thanks timethief. I was helped mightily by kokkieh as indicated above on my earlier problem. Sorry to be such a “taker” right now, but I haven’t enough familiarity to “give” back yet. Appreciate your generosity.

No problem. kokkieh is doing such a great job of volunteering during prime time North American internet hours that for the first time in over 8 years, I feel like I can back away a little from spending so many hours here – alleluia!

  • @timethief
High praise coming from you. Thanks. Prime time North American internet hours is late afternoon when my brain isn’t capable of studying over here. The forums are more constructive than my usual distractions :)

I’m so happy to see how well you do here. Rock on!
