Page can't be edited or deleted

My blog has an old ugly page that I can’t get rid of, and when I try to create new pages with new names, the ugly old page takes over the new name. So when you click the new name on the site’s page list (that is, Home, New, etc) you see the ugly old page instead of the new one I created.
When you go to Dashboard>Pages>All Pages, and try to click the new page I named New, the ugly old page appears instead. And the new page design (even though Published under the name New) appears nowhere on the list by any name under Dashboard>Pages>All Pages.

Why not just change the design of the ugly old page, you might ask. Well, the ugly old page will not accept edits! I have tried to change the featured image using the edit tools, using the same procedure that worked when I designed new pages such as my static page. But the edit changes never appear on the ugly old page! It still has the ugly orange default image from the theme offerings. I have tried other edits I want (such as choosing the ‘one column, no sidebar’ option my theme offers), but the ugly old page stays the same.

I have tried to kill the ugly old page by using the Trash button in Dashboard>Pages>All Pages>Edit Page. I have pressed Delete Permanently. I have emptied the trash. I can make the ugly page disappear from any Page list. But if I then create the new page I want, the ugly old page will appear under the new page’s name!

I want to make a new, non-ugly-orange page where my blogposts will appear. I have created such a page, named it, and then entered that name as the Posts Page in the Settings>Reading area where I have also successfully designated my static page. But when I write a post, it appears on the ugly old page under the new page name!

    Any ideas gratefully accepted.

The “home” page on wordpress sites does not exist as a page. It is dynamically created by the PHP script files when needed.

Secondly, pages that you create are static and sit outside of the blog structure so you cannot add posts to them. They are designed for content that seldom if ever changes (example would be an about page).

You can create a new “posts” page and then go to settings > reading and assign that as the page to show your posts, but it is still going to take on the look of the overall site. It will just have a different name such as “New” instead of “Home”.

Since your site is set to private, I cannot look at it so all I can offer is general stuff really. I don’t even know what theme you are using or anything like that.

@thesacredpath I am facing a similar issue. Currently I am building my site using the twentyeleven theme. After searching for a while, I found the header image can be converted into a slider or slideshow by making use of twentyeleven’s showcase feature. However, to do so, the page setting has to be set to ‘showcase template’, something I can’t do to the homepage because it doesn’t show up on the page list and thus can’t be edited. While what you explained clears things up for me, there still is a way to convert that header or remove it, and replace it with a slider using the showcase feature. I haven’t found instructions on how to do it so I was hoping you could help me. Looking forward to your response.

To use the showcase as your main landing page, create a new page, name it what you want (home, welcome, whatever) and then publish it. Then go to settings > reading and set that page as your “static” front page. If you also want a regular “blog” page to show your posts, you will have to create a page for that purpose and publish it and then set that page as your “posts” page at settings > reading.

By default, the only thing that will show up on the showcase page will be your latest post. That is it. If you want other posts to show up on that page, you have to manually set those posts as “sticky” posts and then when you want other posts to show on the main page, you have to unsticky the old ones and sticky the new ones.

The showcase page on twenty eleven requires a lot of user involvement. Nothing except for the latest post is automatic on the showcase page.

Ok that makes sense. Also, how do I replace the header image area with the showcase feature?

Thanks for your comments. I posted the original question.
    I’m using Twenty Ten.

What’s mystifying is that the default page where the blogposts show up is NOT reflecting the look of the overall site as I established it when I organized the widgets and chose the featured image. The “ugly old page” persists in using the ugly orange default image in the strip across the top, (which I didn’t choose) instead of my own photograph that should give the blog its personal look and identity.

I am wondering what’s the point of creating a WordPress blog if it enforces a uniform ugly design on everyone’s blog page! Maybe I should establish the blog on Tumblr.

Any and all help very welcome. Thanks!

I’m sorry but since your site is set to private, we cannot look at it and consequently, we cannot help. Here’s a link to the theme information > http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyten/ Here’s a link to all the threads on Twenty Ten > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/twenty-ten

As timethief says, it is very difficult for us to help since we cannot see your site. I’ll offer two links here for you to read. One is the support document on featured images, and the second is a blog post done by Panos on featured images.

    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/featured-images/

In twenty ten, the “featured image” replaces the regular header image when viewing single posts or static pages. The regular header image set at appearance > header will show on the “blog” page where all posts are listed. If you want a different image to show up on that page, you have to upload a new header image.

    Thanks for all the comments!
I had also tried to use the Appearance>Header tactic, and uploaded the image I wanted, and saved the change; but my chosen image still didn’t appear. Still the ugly orange default image persisted!
The Appearance>Header page didn’t give me the option to crop my chosen image. So if that image was the wrong size, I didn’t get the chance to change it. I watched the video on Custom Header installation, but this didn’t explain how I could call up the option to crop the image size if that choice doesn’t appear after you upload the header image you want.

I solved my problem by deleting the header. This means I have no signature image at the top of my blog page, but at least I was able to purge the ugly orange default image.

I’m new to WordPress, obviously, but the procedures seem unnecessarily complex compared to other systems I’ve used. In Apple’s iWeb, for example, you can just put what you want on the page.
But thanks to all you knowledgeable folk who helped me!
