    Hi Shaun,

Could you let me know what steps you took to add content to your home page? I just took a look at the site at http://magentadotbrands.wordpress.com/ and I’m not seeing any updates there.

The more details you can give me about where and how you entered that content, the more it will help me investigate this for you.

    Good morning Rachel,

Thanks for your prompt response :)

Ok. 1.) Logged on as Velocetteracing.
2.) Added another blog “MagentaDot Brands” (purchased blog and premium theme etc)
3.) First task I created a static “Home” page on WordPress.
(Note. Using my local provider “register direct” from whom I have purchased the domain “magentadotbrands.com” I have set up a URL redirection to http://magentadotbrands.wordpress.com/
4.) In order to keep the site hidden from public view while I build it I have designated that it is private.

5.) I create a first static page with a few words and images: http://magentadotbrands.wordpress.com/

Here’s a sceenshot of what I see in the edit window:
    https://magentadotbrands.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/picture-44.png

6.) When I click “view page” I can see all the customisation I’ve made to the theme, colours, background image, logo, fonts—but I see no page content. The page is blank.

Btw have changed the site from private to public in an effort to problem-solve the above.

    Hi there,

The first step to help your site work correctly is to finish mapping your domain magentadotbrands.com according to this guide: Map an Existing Domain

Right now, your domain is set up to pull the contents of your site from WordPress.com and put it into a frame, which may cause problems for your site and make things not work correctly. To finish mapping your domain, you’ll need to update your domain’s name servers to the following (your domain registrar can help you with that step):

    • NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

    Good morning Rachel,
Thanks for your prompt response. Re. the subject of the post, I realised yesterday morning that the problem I was having was a classic R.M.S. problem (Read the Manual Stupid :). After spending 15 minutes reading the Ampersand manual I understood the folly of my opening question. I’m also pleased to report that a few hours of uploading content / working the nav structure turned my frown upside down. The Ampersand/Wordpress cms works mostly flawlessly, apart from the occasional “server dropped connection” double take. But WordPress platform is inherently stable as I engage with it from my workstation.

Jumping topics to your suggestion to map my domain according to the guide. I find myself on the horns of a dilemma regarding this. For example, the “costs” to me for mapping my domains velocetteracing and/or magentadotbrands to WordPress is that I automatically lose the email accounts from the existing nameservers. (And all that implies re. changing the mail setup across multiple devices.) Plus I lose the url “cloaking” facility and advanced options for cloaking support.

I am the first to admit that my IT knowledge is limited, perhaps there are good reasons to Map my Existing Domain.

To conclude, I have a medium term plan to set up a third Portfolio / Blog site this year. With all 3 projects the longer term plan is to potentially migrate the sites to their respective existing domains, while continuing to subscribe to WordPress in order to manage them.

Finally, a question, if I upgrade to the full business subscription, does that one subscription work as an umbrella over all the website / blogs I create?

    Thanks for your consideration,
    Shaun

A couple of other questions regarding the two premium themes I’ve purchased. I see that to use their respective forums you have to login, but there is no facility offered to sign up on their websites. Going to their sites to seek forum support therefore appears to be a Catch22 dead end.

What is the trick to login to the Basis and Ampersand theme forums?

    Hi Shaun,

If you map your domain to WordPress.com you can Add Email (linking your existing email hosting service to your domain here). However, if you’re happy with how things are working now you can certainly leave things as they are. :)

Finally, a question, if I upgrade to the full business subscription, does that one subscription work as an umbrella over all the website / blogs I create?

All upgrades at WordPress.com are per blog, rather than per account, so the WordPress.com Premium and Business plans will only apply to the blog you purchase them for. You’re welcome to upgrade each blog if you’d like the Business upgrades on each one, but you’ll need to purchase it separately for each blog.

What is the trick to login to the Basis and Ampersand theme forums?

You can find the WordPress.com support forums for those themes here:

    http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ampersand

    http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/basis

You’ll need to be logged in to your WordPress.com account to post in those forums.

Just let me know if you have any other questions about that! :)

    Thanks Rachel, that’s all helpful.

Jumping topics to creating tables using html. I had a go at copy pasting the relevant source code for the example of the table in the ampersand demo site in order to create a new table in that style with my own content. The result was only of limited success, by which I mean the font size changed down several points from the standard Paragraph size. That and I wasn’t quite clear on which code defines the number of columns and how wide they are. I wondered if there is some change I need to make to the css to control that?

Can you share with me the code snippets for making a 2 column, “even”, “odd” coloured rows table please?

On the business package idea. I will give it some thought because I can see potential for designing and building a very pleasing customised site design on the Ampersand template, using a few touches of custom html and css. While this forum support is great, I can imagine that the live chat feature would be like having an expert available at your shoulder to answer questions and assist with training and design problem solving on the platform.

You can find some information about creating HTML tables on our support page here: Using HTML

However, if you’re looking for help specific to the Ampersand theme and how it styles tables, I’d recommend posting in the Ampersand theme forum: http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ampersand

That way you can be sure to get the right information (including any theme-specific CSS tips) for your theme. :)

    Good morning Rachel, thanks,

I have a second domain name “magentadot.co.nz” that I would like to redirect to my “magentadotbrands.com” blog on WP. Have spoken with my provider here in New Zealand, RegisterDirect, about this and they advise me that in order to achieve this I need to ask WordPress for the/your “A record IP address”. Are you able to provide that information please? /s

Hi Rachel, below is the question I posted to the forum (maybe you know the answer or can guide me re. what the search terms are that I need to use on the forum, thanks :)

I see that every Portfolio item “child” page I publish displays on every Portfolio “parent” page across the site.

My question; is it possible to manage the child portfolio pages so that they only display as a thumbnail item on their specific top-level Portfolio “parent” page, and on the dynamic homepage?

Second question. Is it only possible to add tags and categories to blog posts? Can they be attributed to site pages?

    All the best,
    Shaun Waugh

P.S. Liking the Ampersand theme very much.

The blog I need help with is magentadotbrands.wordpress.com.

    Hi Shaun,

I need to ask WordPress for the/your “A record IP address”. Are you able to provide that information please?

The best way to map a domain to a WordPress.com blog is to use the WordPress.com name servers I mentioned earlier (also mentioned here: Map an Existing Domain).

However, if your registrar requires that you create A records, please note that our IPs change over time. Because of this, your domain might stop working at some point in the future. If that happens, please get in touch with us and we can give you the current IPs so you can update your domain’s records.

If you still want to go ahead and map your domain using A records/IP addresses, please be sure to create at least two, pointing to two different IPs from the list below:

    • 76.74.254.120
    • 66.155.11.238
    • 192.0.81.250
    • 66.155.9.238
    • 192.0.80.250
    • 76.74.254.123

Regarding your other questions, I see that the Ampersand theme author replied to your forum thread here:

    http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/topic/i-want-child-portfolio-item-pages-to-display-only-on-their-parent-home

Just let me know if I can do anything more to help. :)
