page extensions in WordPress
-
Hi:
I’m new to WordPress as a platform for website development. I’m used to creating static html pages and naming them index.html, and aboutus.html, services.html, etc. I’m going to be changing client websites over from being static html brochure sites to being dynamic sites via WordPress, but I want to keep my existing page names whenever possible. It appears that the default page urls in WordPress have numbers in them, but you can manually name a page something like: http:.//www.mysite.com/about but there isn’t a .html, or .php or anything. Will Google see http:.//www.mysite.com/about as being the same as http:.//www.mysite.com/about.html ?
Thanks!

Sounds like you will be self hosting the site so you should amble over to the keepers of the WordPress.ORG software: http://wordpress.org/support/
This site is for sites hosted on WordPress.COM, for differences: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
WordPress generates all pages on the fly based on a database so there are no directories as such, looks like it but all an illusion (but works great!)
If your site is self hosted you can get all sorts of Plug-in’s to extend the base functions for things like remapping pages if you need to keep old URL’s working.

PS – the naming convention for Pages and Posts can be changed if you are self hosted, see the part on Permalinks

Thanks for answering! Yes, I realized that I was in the wrong place AFTER posting my question.
Thanks again!

You are welcome – a large % of people make the same mistake – there are also many on the .ORG site that should be on .COM, so I guess it balances out.
good luck
