Page Jump [Harmonic Theme]

  • Unknown's avatar

On the demo of the Harmonic theme, clicking the “About” link in the menu bar scrolls the page down to the “About” section of the front page via a page jump. However, on my site, it doesn’t do this. How can I make the menu bar link jump to the About section of the front page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey there @tiaseifert!

I’m pretty sure that the page jump only works if you’ve told it to “jump” to a place on the same page. I don’t think it will “jump” to a spot if that spot is not on the same page.

As a test, try to make a menu item link to something on the same page. If that works then we know my theory is correct.

    I hope this helps!

Hi there! Thanks for responding. On the Harmonics theme, the front page contains multiple sections – a full page graphic, a list of blog posts, a “page,” a widgets sections, and a portfolio. On the demo site (https://harmonicdemo.wordpress.com/) if you click the “About” link at the bottom of the first screen, it automatically scrolls down to the “About” section of the main page. I’m not sure how to set this up on my own site, though. Can you help? Thanks!

This is still Tia, by the way – I’m just logged in from a different account!

Yes I understand what you’re asking.

In order for the page jump to work, you have to be jumping to a spot on the same page. You can’t switch pages (by changing the URL address) and still have a page jump occur.

Try putting the “About” section in your Menu. When you do this, clicking on “About” will make your page “jump” to the corresponding section.

I’m afraid it doesn’t work. I’ve go the About page in my menu, but when I click the menu link, it just reloads the page. It doesn’t jump down.

    @ tiaseifert,
Your “About” page is assigned to a Front Page Template and is your homepage. The header “About” link just goes to the homepage, stopping at the Site Title section.

    You are correct
The “About” link in the demo works differently. Each of those links on the bottom left of the footer nav bar is in fact a page jump, as you can tell if you hover over a link, or click on any one of them.

These links are created in the Customize page, at each of the second through fifth theme sections: News, Page, Widgets, and Portfolio. Open any one of those sections and scroll to the bottom of it. You will see an empty Footer Link Text field. I believe these would have contained the corresponding section name (News, Page, Widgets, and Portfolio) by default and you might have removed them at some point. You needn’t add all of them back if you only want a link to the about page. Just add “About” to the Footer Link Text field of the Page section, and save the change.

It’s curious that there is no option to place a footer link to the Title section.

    Better yet…
If you’d prefer to use the header menu for your page jump “About” link, you can create a link in a custom menu with the destination URL https://dickinsonisdead.wordpress.com/#slide-3.

    @ tiaseifert,
Did you know that your username is linked to a deleted website address?

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for catching that! The About jump sort of works – it works on certain browsers some of the time, but it’s better than nothing! Thanks so much.

    @ tiaseifert,
You’re welcome. With the latest Firefox your header menu “About” link has worked every time I’ve tried it. However, I was able to duplicate failure of that “About” link with Google Chrome.

The corresponding footer menu page jump link has worked, with either Firefox or Google Chrome browsers, in each case I’ve tested:

    1. On the demo
    2. On my test website
    3. Using the page jump link https://dickinsonisdead.wordpress.com/#slide-3 that I provided above, which you may add at Customize to display in the footer widget area.

    Correction:

The third case shouldn’t be included as comparable to the first two, because (being a volunteer) I wasn’t able to test it on your site. I merely used the link given here to reach the proper page with a right click > open in new window, or copied and pasted it into the browser address bar with Firefox and Google Chrome.

    @ tiaseifert,

The failure of the header menu “About” link on your site in my test, when using a recent version of the Google Chrome browser, and the fact you found that “it works on certain browsers some of the time,” together suggest a bug. I will tag the topic for staff attention.
