page jump irregularity – lost when add a new link to page

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi.

I used the wordpress.com tutorial, and have been getting great results creating page jumps. However, anytime I modify a post or page by added a new link, I lose pretty much all of the id attributes (or “anchors”). The href=”#” links stay, but the id’s are lost. So each time I make a modification that includes adding a link, I have to go back and set my id/anchors all over again.

It would be great if you could just tell me what I need to do to avoid this happening – it is time consuming and frustrating to continually re-do lost work. But it kind of feels like I’m just telling you guys about a gliche in the system. I’m not sure what I would do differently, or why adding a new link would make all (or sometimes just most) of the id’s disappear.

Look forward to receiving more information! Thanks.

    Hi there,

I’m sorry that’s been happening! I’d be happy to look into this, but it would help to see an example. Can you send me a link to a post or page where this happened to you? That will help me understand what’s going on. Thanks!

Sure. It’s pretty much anywhere I used them – which are in these posts:

I redid the anchors multiple times on each post yesterday, and have finally got everything working right now. But the pattern is, if I incorporate a new link (or make a change to an old one) I loose my anchors and have to recreate them. These posts are designed to be modified and/or added to over time (they are each a collection of exercises in a body of curriculum that will grow and be revised over time), so I do not want to have to reset my anchors every time I go into the posts.

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

Thanks! I took a look at the revisions on your posts, and I see the changes you had to make with the anchors there. However, when I did some testing on my blog, I couldn’t reproduce the problem you mentioned.

I’m trying to do some more testing to figure out what’s going on. Can you answer a few more questions for me?

    1. When you edit the posts (to add a new link or change an old one), do you do that in the Visual editor or the Text editor?

    2. When you open the post editor to edit your post, are your anchors still there? Or are they gone as soon as you open the post editor?

    3. When you add a new link to the post, do the other anchors disappear right away? Or do the only disappear after you update the post to save your changes?

That information will help me investigate this further. Thanks!

Thanks for looking into this. I’ll do my best to answer your questions.

    1. I sometimes edit the posts with Visual, sometimes with Text. Usually, when I’m working with a link, I use Visual and open up the link box by clicking the link icon. But when creating a link for a page jump, I was just going straight into the Text editor. I lost my anchors either way.

    2. I’m not completely sure, because there were so many changes that happened yesterday and I’m not able to create a test post today (I certainly don’t want to disturb what’s there right now! :) My memory is that the anchors would be gone when I opened the post editor. Sometimes the “disappearing” happened (or at least I first noticed it) when I viewed my post after making and updating changes.

    3. I’m pretty sure the anchors only disappear after I’ve saved my changes.

    Hope this helps.

  • From what you’ve described, the reason that the anchors are being stripped out is a result of switching from the the visual editor to the text editor, or vice versa. This is the result of the visual editor’s attempt to clean up the HTML that is created (behind the scenes) when editing in this mode.

The visual editor does this by default, and it can have the unintended effect of removing code that you intentionally added. The easiest way to avoid this problem is to stay in text mode (and not switch to visual) when editing pages that contain anchor links that you have added. This will safely preserve your previously added HTML.

Usually, when I’m working with a link, I use Visual and open up the link box by clicking the link icon.

There is a link builder button in text view that accomplishes the same thing, so you don’t have to write HTML for all of you links. You can see me hovering over it here here; click it and it will bring up the familiar link dialog box that you are used to seeing.

    Hope that helps!
