Page Link Keeps Adding The Number 2

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I have a portfolio site where the link shows as:
    https://perkinsdesigns.com/portfolio-2/

I’ve tried to remove the “2” from the link address, without any luck.

Does anyone know how I can make the portfolio link show as:
    https://perkinsdesigns.com/portfolio/

    Any help is appreciated .

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That number 2 means the first one is in the Trash. See: Permanently Deleting a Post or Page https://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#permanently-deleting-a-post-or-page

    Hi,

    Thanks for responding, timethief.

I reviewed the link you cited. Unfortunately, there’s no trash to empty:

When I click on “All Posts”, I see All, Published & Private (no trash).
When I click on “All Pages”, I see All & Published (no trash).

Despite being a portfolio capable theme, Ampersand doesn’t use the usual WordPress projects system. Instead, it has pages assigned to the parent portfolio-template.

That said, when I click on the “Portfolio” option in the sidebar, I don’t have any projects listed. Also, there aren’t any “Project Types” or “Project Tags”, either.

And, when I click on Posts > Categories, or Posts > Tags, both show no “portfolio” entries.

Under Settings, the “Portfolio Projects” checkbox is enabled.

When I seek to edit the page entitled “Portfolio” (assigned to the portfolio template), editing the slug or permalink does nothing – changes revert to “-2” upon clicking Update.

Searching my pages for the term “portfolio”, reveals three pages using the term with the body of the text only, as well as the actual page entitled “Portfolio”.

Searching my posts for the term “portfolio”, reveals 13 posts containing external links (redbubble.com, etc.) which contain the term only within said links.

All told, the remedy remains elusive. It seems that such a minor matter would easily be resolved. Very frustrating…

Any help is appreciated – thanks.

  • Hi –

4 days ago the Portfolio page was deleted, hence the /portfolio-2.

If you go to https://perkinsdesigns.com/portfolio/ you’ll see it is restored, and I’ve added a “test” project there.

Updating the link in the menu from /portfolio-2 to /portfolio should fix this up.

Note that adding the “projects” will automatically publish them on your portfolio page like the “test” project I added.

You can do that here: https://perkinsdesigns.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=jetpack-portfolio

Thanks for responding, timethief & lizkarkoski.

Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem.

Clicking on my menu item “Portfolio” invokes a special portfolio template associated with my selected theme, Ampersand, which lists 5 portfolio items at a time with a “read more” link to an individual page per portfolio item. It also includes an “older posts” link to subsequent groupings of 5 portfolio items.

With this theme, each portfolio item is created as a separate page with an uploaded gallery of designs, wherein page attributes include a Parent (Portfolio) and a Template (Portfolio Item) – https://wordpress.com/theme/ampersand/setup.

The “test” project which you’ve entered applies to the standard portfolio function used with WordPress/Jetpack. I’ve used this portfolio set up on several occasions with different portfolio themes (Blask, Sketch, Illustratr, etc.) which stipulate such steps for set up.

I don’t need help changing the link in my menu. What I need is to be able to change the link to my portfolio page. As I mentioned, if you hover over my “Portfolio” menu item, or examine the permalink from the backend on the page itself, the “portfolio-2” notation remains. Attempts to change this by altering the slug name, or clicking the edit button next to the page Permalink (as admin), don’t change anything.

Given that I’m not using the sidebar Portfolio/Projects process, why is WordPress continuing to insert a “2” into my link?

Your help with this matter is appreciated. Thank you.

P.S. – I’ve since deleted the “test” project.

Thank you for your responses, timethief & lizkarkoski.

I’ve decided to use “gallery” as the name of my portfolio page.

  • Good Morning –

I think I misunderstood your question yesterday. You do not want to use the portfolio page template, and portfolio item template when setting it up?

Do you still want the portfolio to result at /portfolio? Or is /gallery how you want it now?

    Thanks for your response, Liz.

My query was part question and part rambling – sorry about that.

Ideally, I’d like to have /portfolio. Yet, as noted, this theme (Ampersand) sets up the portfolio by creating galleries in pages (not projects). So, I haven’t created any portfolio projects, per se.

I like the manner in which Ampersand presents portfolio items, formatted as child pages, and would prefer to retain this functionality.

I am perplexed as to why I cannot create a page entitled “Portfolio”, assign it as using the portfolio template under Page Attributes and then simply use that page in my menu *** without the permalink adding a “-2” to the link of the page *** ?

If, using this theme, it’s not possible to create a page entitled “Portfolio” which links to
    https://perkinsdesigns.com/portfolio
    then I’ll continue using /gallery.

    Thanks again

  • No problem, I understand. I’m working on this and I’ll post an update for you later on.

    Sounds good, Liz. Thank you.

  • Yay, I am back with good news :)

I was able to find the cause and have changed the permalink to /portfolio for you. I’ve renamed the “Gallery” page as “Portfolio” and updated the menu too. Let me know if there’s anything else I can do. Thank you for being patient while I worked on this.
