Page Not Found Error

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog uses the “Contempt” theme and the Jetpack plugin.

When responding to comments on the “Your Questions & Comments” page and I click “Post Comment”, it goes to a page indicating “Not Found”… I click on the tab for the page where I left the reply and my response is there. I’ve had a reader indicate they follow in RSS and also have the same problem when they click the link to see responses in the blog.

I don’t understand why it’s not refreshing to the proper page and showing my reply, as it had in the past. I have not personally made any changes to the blog.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Your Questions & Comments” page link

I encountered the same error message in a test, though my comment has not be published yet. Here’s the error message page: https://auctionlaw.wordpress.com/questions-comments/comment-page-34/#comment-4833. I suspect that this issue might be a result of the site not being able to handle the present volume of comments (1062) on a single page. I believe it’s using a retired theme, which might be a factor. I’ll call for staff attention to the topic. You may subscribe to the topic in the sidebar here.

  • Hi there,

My blog uses the “Contempt” theme and the Jetpack plugin.

If your site is using the Jetpack plugin, it’s not a WordPress.com site. The site you indicated in this thread, http://auctionlaw.wordpress.com/, is a WordPress.com site, not using Jetpack, and which hasn’t been active in two years.

I don’t see any Jetpack site connected to your account. If you’re using Jetpack’s comments, then the reason comments won’t post could be that Jetpack is disconnected. You need to log into your WP-Admin dashboard and reconnect it.

For more help with this, please post in the self-hosted forums, as we don’t have access to non-WordPress.com sites.

    You’ve completely lost me…
    1. The site is certainly active.
I may not have made post on the home page in a while, but I receive questions almost every week and reply to those questions.

    2. It is definitely a WordPress.com site and the Jetpack plugin is installed and shows “Active” under Plugins.

    3. The site had functioned fine since 2007 and I’ve had no reason to make any changes to any sort of settings. This problem just cropped up within the last few months, although I haven’t had the time to determine the problem and have just answered reader questions, then clicked the tab at the top after being directed to the error page.

  • Thanks for linking to the exact page.

This might be related to either the number of comments on that page, or to the fact that you’re using a retired theme, though I’m not able to reproduce the issue on a test site.

I’ve asked a developer to look into this. I’ll let you know if it’s something we’re able to fix, but you might want to consider switching to one of the active themes listed at My Site ->Themes.

So, how many comments are allowed on a page?
I just noticed that when I click “Older Comments”, I get the same Not Found error page.

  • There’s no particular number of comments “allowed” on a page. But you’re basically forcing users to only leave comments on one page, instead of leaving comments on the specific posts they are asking about. The WordPress software wasn’t designed to work like that.

And if you read my answer properly you’ll see I said it might be related. I didn’t say it is the cause. That’s why I’ve asked a developer to check on this. It’s much more likely because you’re using a theme that hasn’t received any maintenance since it was retired in 2012. When themes become too old to support the newest features we retire them, and then they start breaking over time.

  • You mentioned that this hasn’t happened in the past. Can you recall more or less when it started showing a page not found for the comments on that page? Knowing when the problem started might help us narrow down the cause.

Unfortunately, I can’t remember when the problem actually started… it’s been at least a few months, now. I’ve just been dealing with it, as the people are seeing the current replies to their questions.

I can see all of the comments on my Admin page, but only the latest comments will show on the site’s current page.

If I click on an older comment shown on the admin page (Comments), I get the Not Found error on the site page that opens.

I might note that there was a good reason why I made a Q&A page and started closing comments on the posts after a short period of time.

I was getting a lot of questions on the posts which had nothing to do with the particular topic. So, realizing that people had a variety of questions about a lot of different things (and sometimes the same question someone else also asked, but they won’t search to find the answer before asking again), it made sense to start a separate page for them to post their questions.

    Follow-up…
I have played around with various other themes.
Regardless of any particular theme, the “Not Found” problem persists with all of them.

  • Thanks for the extra information. Our developers are looking into this, but at this point it’s a mystery why your site is behaving this way. I’ll keep you updated on what we find.

  • Hi there,

I’m happy to let you know that your comments pages should now be showing correctly again.

It appears there was a problem with your site’s permalink settings, and our theory is that something was set up incorrectly when you first created the site in 2007, which cause it to break recently. As our process for setting up sites have evolved since then it’s unlikely for something like this to happen to a new site, and it shouldn’t happen again for your site either now that we’ve updated it.

I’d still look into updating your site to a current theme, but that’s your call :)

GREAT! It’s working again, just like it had for years. Thanks for the fix…

As far as the theme, I’ve been through most of them and I don’t see anything that fits near as well as the one I’ve been using.

    Thanks again!

  • Glad we could help :)

  • Regarding the theme, just keep in mind that at some point it might start breaking beyond what we’re able to fix. But if it’s working for you at this point it’s fine to keep using it :)
