Page not saved messages

  • Unknown's avatar

I keep getting messages from wordpress that the page I am editing is not saved:

    1. Edit a page
    2. Click “Update”
    3. Get a message: “Page updated! Visit Page.”
    4. Click “Close”
    5. Get a popup:
      wordpress.com says:
You have unsaved changes. Are you sure you want to leave this page?

It seems that almost always the page is saved. Why do I get those popups?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I’ve also had this issue when using Chrome 67 on Win10Pro.

Try the suggestions in this support guide and see if they don’t help you as well. https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

If it doesn’t help, please return to this forum thread and tell us which OS and browser you are using. Thanks.

I went through the suggestions on the page and did not find any issues on my setup.

    Getting the error on:

    OS: macOS Sierra 10.12.6
Browser: Google Chrome Version 67.0.3396.99 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Yes, Chrome seems to be the common denominator here. I helped another user not long ago that was having the same problem. In all cases the post does seem to save.

Let me flag this for Staff attention too. Perhaps they have more insight to this.

  • Howdy –

Thanks for the tag, justjennifer. This is interesting, and I’ve not been able to replicate. I’ve also taken a look through internal reports and haven’t found any other mentions about this.

Can you tell me if it happens on a clean install of Chrome? Or incognito?

  • js4j –

Which page is this happening on?

Happens on Site Pages (any page), both drafts and published.

Is worth mentioning the pages include Java source snippets described here https://en.support.wordpress.com/code/posting-source-code/
Those have their own array of issues, to the point it makes me think they crash the pages on save.

    Happens in Incognito as well.

  • @js4j I’m on the same versions and haven’t been able to duplicate this yet. Is it an intermittent issue?

Also, what page are you on when you click edit on the post? There are several pages you can edit from, if that makes sense, and I’m wondering if that makes any difference.

Its pretty permanent, and happens on my other mac with latest High Sierra/Chrome.

The way I get into edit:

    1. Click “My Site”
    2. Click “Site Pages
    3. Click on any page in “Published” or “Drafts”
    4. Type something
    5. Click “Update”
    6. Click “Close”
  • Hi there,

This is a known issue – I encounter it regularly myself – and has been around for a while. You can see the discussion around it in https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/9833

To date we’ve not been able to narrow down exactly what’s causing this. It does appear to be related to shortcodes being used in a post, as this most consistently happens in those cases, but it doesn’t always happen, and it does occasionally happen when no shortcodes are present as well.

At this point I’m hoping this will be resolved when the new WordPress editor comes out in WordPress 5.0 later this year, as it is very disconcerting when a message tells you your changes didn’t save leaving you with no idea whether or not it’s safe to close your browser. 9.99999 cases out of 10 this message is a false-positive, though, so as long as the autosave indicator says “Saved”, or as long as you clicked Publish or Update and the live version of the post looks fine to you, it should be safe to ignore that message.

Thanks, I learned to live with it :-)
