Page or Post: for old work?

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to put my (old) Poems online, but Wonder if I should put them in Pages or Posts? Posts all have current dates on, but that will be wrong: as they were written years ago!
Can I alter the dates on Posts? Or should I make hundreds of Pages with a single poem in each one (correctly dated)?
PS: As you can probably tell by this question: I am a total beginner!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi kenhallettblog and welcome,

happy to help you anyway I can.

Both of these are options for your poems.

First thing I would suggest is to check out this post-vs-page. It’s a clear guide as the difference between Blog posts and pages. This should help you choose with path you’d like to take.

Can I alter the dates on Posts?

Yes you can! If you decide to go with posting your poems to the blog posts then follow these steps:

    1. Click on My sites
    2. Next to Blog Posts click on Add
    3. You will see a small cog symbol with NEW DRAFT Click on it.
4.You’ll see the date there and can edit it to which ever date you see fit.

PS: As you can probably tell by this question: I am a total beginner!

We all start somewhere buddy, if you need any more advice or get stuck just reply to me on here. :)

    cheers LJ

    Thanks LJ!
I tried the “New Draft” cog but it seems to only allow you to go back One month at a time: which, for a Poem from 30 years ago (yes: I’m that old!) would need 361 clicks!
Call me lazy: but that seems a bit of a chore. Now if there was an option to wipe the date out, and insert another, it would be OK. However, I can’t see any way to do that?
As I know zero about coding and don’t want to upgrade, I think I shall give up on that option…

Ah ok! Yes i can see how that could take forever.

You could go down the Pages route and create a page for each poem and date them yourself in the title?

    e.g Poem Name – 01/02/1970

    Thanks LJ,

Now I’m beginning to wonder if I should have opted for a website instead of a blog?
I could end up with loads of pages and almost no posts!

Someone said “Why not put all your work on a blog?’
It seemed like a good idea. Yet is it really blogging, after all, if none of it is new..?

(My second day and already I have philosophical questions, LOL!)

I think it can be anything you want it to be :-)

You could always use your pages for you previous work and then blog progress on any new work you are producing. Then once a piece is finished you can add it to the pages section!

Either way you should get your artwork out there so the world can see it!

A blog is a website. The difference between blog and website is simply structure and semantics.

A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.

What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one-way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds, and as others do not backlink to pages, it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.

Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/
