Page Order function on Manage >> Pages (not critical)
-
Have been going through the FAQ’s and posts, and am not able to find a clear explanation of what the “Page Order” function box does on the Manage >> Pages >> Write Page input page.
Need to know if and how values affect layout, if at all.
Have several pages all with the same Page Order number, and it does not appear to have any impact, but before this blows up on me, need to double check.
Would it be appropriate to have the following set up?
Main Page — Page Order #0
(sub page) Posts — Page Order #1
(sub page) Site Map — Page Order #2
(sub page)About — Page Order #3If yes to above, is there reason not to do this?
Main Page — Page Order #0
(sub page) Posts — Page Order #1
(sub sub page) — Current Posts – Page Order #1
(sub sub page) — Archives — Page Order #2
(sub page) Site Map — Page Order #2
(sub page) About — Page Order #3If this is answered elsewhere, a link is fine, I am not finding it searching on the “Pages” tag.
Thanks

Normally pages are alphabetically sorted by title. Pages with a numeric title are placed above pages that begin with a letter. Here is how to change that order:

Saw that one TimeThief, thanks. Unfortunately, it didn’t indicate the Page Order function was theme dependent, and just found your post from two days ago on a similar question.
So to qualify this.
1. The Page Order function depends on Theme. If the Theme supports it, then the Pages will be listed by number assigned.
2. If the Theme does not support it, Pages will appear in alphabetical order, (unless using the workaround timethief posted above).
Therefore, in my examples in the original post, the first layout is permissible, the second is not.
Where do we find in the theme how it handles Pages (and for that matter, Categories)? I’m not finding an options list or a summary of features specified anywhere.
Am seeing “it depends on the theme” as the answer to many questions, but there seems to be a gap on where users can go to find out what works with what themes.

engtech has done theme reviews of most themes that include behaviours, features and known bugs. http://engtech.wordpress.com/tools/wordpress/wordpress-theme-reviews/
However, Garland is a recent and some might say pre-mature theme addition that has not yet been reviewed. It’s a Drupal theme http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=7077&replies=12#post-46117
This will help you understand blogrolls, links and categories and their relationships. And this will help with the set up and configuring of widgets.
You can have as many blogs as you want. You could get another one just for testing. Then the angst factor involved in any changes disappears. You try every change there first and know how it will behave prior to making the change(s) on your blog.

Thank you.
I would close this one out as resolved, with the following suggestions.1. As that websites are non-linear in structure, Page Order limited to sequential numbering will pose problems. It is clear in the FAQ the Page feature was intended and expected to have Sub-Pages. Sequential numbering and alphabetizing do not lend themselves well to parent-child hierarchies. To be useful for bloggers, this feature needs some adjustment. To put it simply, rather than 1, 2, 3, the need is for 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-1,… and so on for this to be an effective feature.
2. engtech’s reviews are extremely helpful, but the information is not intuitive to find. Information such as he provides needs to be incorporated into the Theme selection page, and the FAQ.
Regarding the articles on bloggersblurt actually had one of them opened at that time of your last reply. Unfortunately, I still have problems with disappearing categories. Have not posted about it as I see it come up often here and is low priority at the moment. However, am saving screenshots every time it happens to go over at some future date.
Thanks again.

Thanks both timethief and courtesanconnection for lots of good information. Looks like a good set of suggestions to submit to “feedback”
