“page parent” is not working

  • Unknown's avatar

can somebody please clarify some confusions for me?

is it that no three-column theme allows page parent PRACTICALLY? let me explain, i tried the themes andreas09 and fadtastic, both of them are three-column themes and the pages can theoretically have a page parent. when i used the “page parent” thing, it rendered the following result:

    page parent
    page

(meaning, the page titled “page parent” was set as normal, and the page titled “page” was listed under page parent “page parent”).
and that leaves readers with no option to understand that “page” actually belongs under “page parent” .

it works fine in two-column themes.
and looks like it SHOULD look:

    page parent
    page

and it is easily understandable here that “page” belongs under “page parent”.

if the problem cannot be solved in andreas09 and fadtastic, can somebody pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese refer to me a THREE-COLUMN theme that does support appropriate “page parenting”?

    phew!
    over and out.

please note that it is supposed to look like this the second time:

    page parent
    ………page parent

(the comment box iggnored the blank space i inserted before and which i am now substituting with ……….)

    sorry for the confusion

i’m still confused as to what you’re trying to describe. but from what i can understand, this sounds like a theme-dependent feature. that means certain themes show the hierarchy between page children and page parents, and some don’t. the only way is to change themes, or you could buy the css upgrade and edit the css (not 100% sure if this is possible though).

i’m assuming you’re referring to page tabs on the home page itself, as garland shows page tabs on top. if i’m wrong, please correct.

Are we talking about within a widget or in the sidebar or within the page or where on your blog please?

  • Unknown's avatar

    click http://shomoshor.wordpress.com/
here under the page ‘about this blog” is the page “test”. “test” is acually set under “about this blog” by enabling “page parent”. but it does not show the hierarchy.

    and now click http://shongjog.wordpress.com/
several pages are listed under “private” and it shows the hierarchy.

in case it is a browser issue, i am using ie7, win xp.

  • Unknown's avatar

i’m pretty sure that’s a theme-dependent feature. your 2 blogs use different themes, and i’ve said above that this is something that certain themes do (or don’t in your first blog’s case).

  • Unknown's avatar

    and oh sulz,
i forgot about your query, no it’s not the tabs on top, just pages in the sidebar.

and if it soinds like a theme-dependant feature, then pleeeeeeeeese tell me which three-column theme supports page parents PRACTICALLY. as far as i know, the themes i tried (andreas09 and fadtasic) allows “page parent” theoretically, but PRACTICALLY speaking, the hierarchy is NOT visible.

It’s the CSS of the different themes. For your first blog, it’s actually displaying in the correct parent order where your text page is under it’s parent. The theme just doesn’t indent like the theme of the second blog does.

all blogs allow page parent, whether the hierarchy is shown is another question.

    this link could help.

going with what drmike has said, there’s always the css upgrade as well.

In my humble opinion, this is a really bad response from WordPress on this issue. First, is one of these people actually a WordPress employee. I can tell it’s not drmike and I”m wondering if Sulz is a WordPress employee. Let’s assume no one is a WordPress employee…

I have not paid WordPress a single dollar yet and I have been posting for about 4 days (35 posts) so I understand that I am receiving a great benefit and I take that into consideration in my comments to follow.

If I’m to understand the situation correctly, it is that some themes display the link from a parent to a child when the site is published and some themes do not. In any case, the parent/child relationship actually exists, because that ability was built into the back end design, but the theme doesn’t take advantage of it. Therefore, it is WordPress’ responsibility to it’s customers and potential customers (blog authors) to make the necessary changes in the themes so they take advantage of the parent child hierarchy in the ‘pages’ mode. Their answer might say that it won’t happen for a while but it is clearly their issue to fix it or they could release the code and let a user write it to fix it… This parent/child feature is supposed to be available, the back end is available and working, someone just left that particular code out of some of the templates. So WordPress, please fix it! It can’t be that hard.

The fact that I (potentially a very good customer in the future) read through this post and initially saw no clear answer and then was pointed into never land, reflects poorly on how WordPress interprets their relationship with their most valuable asset, the customer.

Please understand that I know that if Sulz is just another user like me and if WordPress has not even seen this post and if this isn’t their final response to this issue, then I’m just asking that they take a look at the issue and, of course, will fix it. And Sulz, if you are just another user like me (only smarter), then thanks for helping everyone on these issues and I meant no harm. However, if this is WordPress’ answer to this issue then I need to carefully consider who I’m going to do business with because I just don’t have time for answers like this. Nobody does. The parent/child relationship was looked like it was there, and it looked like it would work, and I’m already over an hour into this stupid issue (not to mention the time I spent on the ‘pages’) and I don’t like the answer I found. And besides, if this is the WordPress answer and opinion then they are not good business people and their company will ultimately fail and I don’t want to be part of that big waste of time.

WordPress, if you are out there please respond and let us know what your answer is to this issue and please notify me that you have responded so I know what the deal is.

    Sincerely,
    Joe Putnam

joe putnam: you are certainly entitled to your opinion, as everybody else. to clarify things, i’m a volunteer here; like how wordpress is open source, the forums work that way too. i don’t deny that my knowledge, compared to some other volunteers, is limited.

there are many limitations in wp.com blogs, for instance in this page problem to you. but there are also plenty of great stuff you can’t get anywhere else, for instance the community spirit fostered here.

if you’re still unhappy with the way the forums are handled, you may send your feedback directly to wordpress staff: support at wordpress dot com. i suggest this because staff may not read every thread in the forums, but they read every feedback sent.

alternatively, you could download wordpress and start a self-hosted blog, in which you may have more flexibility, for instance you can tweak your blog to show the page parent-child hiearchy.

by the way, to recognise staff members, they have the title ‘key master’ or ‘moderator’ after their usernames.

If people want to contact staff, they have a Support button on their dashboards.

If people want to vent, they have blogs.

If people have specific problems they want help with, that is what these forums are for. Please strip the above from your posts in these forums to enable us to help you better.

Not everyone is as nice as sulz.
