  is there a way to add a small picture (similar to the widget image picture on the home page) to each individual page?

  i would ideally like to have it above the sidebar like on the front page and have a different one for each page (with text below if possible)

  Hi, each widget can be set to show or not show on certain pages using the widget visibility feature.

  You can then use either an image widget, or hand code a text widget for each page and set the visibility so that it will show only on that page. Click here for more on text widget links.
