Does anyone know the CSS code to remove page titles?

Note: the CSS mentioned will work with The Morning After theme.

If you want to remove the spacing the title was taking up too, try just using #topbanner as a selector.

You can set it in 2 ways:
display: none;

or:

text-indent:-9999px

Some would say the text-indent is a better option for titles because it leaves the title in tact for search engines and crawlers as well as screen readers.

If you do a view source on a page with a hidden title, the title is still there. CSS just asks the browser not to display it.

As I understand it, the search engines do not look at CSS, only at the markup (HTML) so display none should really have no affect on the search engines.

The page HTML is generated by the theme PHP files first so everything is there in the page source and then the browser applies the CSS.

I’m going to back off on the above a little since there are some very old articles on the internet (2005-2007) that indicate Google does look at CSS, but from what I can determine they are looking more for links and such they can pull out for possible indexing. There is this relevant bit from Google Webmaster Central:

If your site is perceived to contain hidden text and links that are deceptive in intent, your site may be removed from the Google index, and will not appear in search results pages.

I think the key work in the above is “deceptive”. Hiding a page title via CSS is, or at least should not be viewed as, deceptive. Hiding a bunch of keywords or hidden links meant just for the search engine to find would be deceptive.

A negative text indent is also more screen reader friendly. On the search engine front, I consider it a fuzzy area since it’s common practice to use either method. I think the general rule of thumb is: “don’t be spammy.”
