Page view on private blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a private blog that i don’t use at the moment as i am author on another blog. My own private blog has had a page view today (Homepage/Archives). How is that possible? No-one has access to my blog other than me and i have not been on my own blogs home page today. I have seen quite a few people in these forums with this same problem with private blogs getting views, and you say it is their own views but i can say with certainty i have NOT viewed my blog. Is a private blog really private? What the heck is going on with private blogs getting views?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Since last August private blogs, which can be viewed only by users chosen by the administrator, track the page views of all of their users.

P.S. It’s possible that Staff entered your blog to check it or do some maintenance work.

You obviously didn’t read my post.

No. It was UK not America.

I did read your post and I’m aware that every one of these threads goes into the searchbox so I included the relevant information and links above for those who will search. I posted the P.S. for your attention and then I flagged this thread for Staff attention.

No. It was UK not America.

Automattic (WordPress.com) Staff are situated all over the world. http://automattic.com/about/#where

But Automattic only ever show up as America on statcounter. In fact they view blogs every day, and it’s always America, never UK.

If you logged into your private blog and discovered had a page view today (Homepage/Archives) then every link you clicked in the blog resulted in a page view stat.

But Automattic only ever show up as America on statcounter. In fact they view blogs every day, and it’s always America, never UK.

That’s interesting and I’m sure when Staff do enter this thread they will be able to provide an answer to your question. Please be patient while waiting.

People who come to the front page of your blog and get the “this blog is private” warning count as one hit as well, even though they cannot read the blog.

Thanks @raincoaster. That makes sense but if someone searched for me wouldn’t they get my Gravatar come up, which leads to the blog i am author on? My private blog has been private for a long time, and this is the first time i’ve had this happen. I’m confused now. I’ve set my posts to draft now though, just in case.

The security is really pretty good on private blogs. I think you should be safe publishing those posts.

What usually turns out to have happened is, you tell somebody in real life about your blog, and they tell someone else, and that someone, not realizing it’s private (or being paranoid “OMG ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT ME???”) puts your blog URL into their browser bar and goes Oh. Damn. Private blog.

Thanks raincoaster, i think you’re right, It’s just a worry when you see a view on a blog that’s private. I didn’t realise it shows as a view this way. I’ll accept that and forget it now as i will never know for certain how it happened anyway, i just know it wasn’t me. If staff do see this i would also like to say, on my dashboard i have a drop down that i can use to switch between the two blogs, and my own private blog used to say, in the drop down, Tindy Wren Poetry (WP.COM PRIVATE) but now it no longer has the word ‘private’, just the blog name. I don’t know if that’s significant or not, but my settings still are set at private. Thanks

  • But Automattic only ever show up as America on statcounter. In fact they view blogs every day, and it’s always America, never UK.

We’re actually a globally distributed company, so you may see views from several possible countries: http://automattic.com/about/#where

Yes, but as i’ve said this was a UK hit, and the Automattic hits on the other blog (and previous blogs) are always from the US, without fail, and we have never, ever had Automattic from the UK (statcounter lists them as Automattic that’s how we know), why would it suddenly just be UK for mine when it has never been UK before. I’m forgetting about it now anyway as it’s making my head spin going around in circles. Thanks

  • Well, most of our employees are in the US, but we do have some in the UK, which would pretty much explain why you almost always see us from the US.

Also, we have no control over how StatCounter lists us.

It’s ok. I didn’t know the blog would show a view if someone clicked on it, until raincoaster explained. that seems the likeliest of what happened. Thanks to all for trying to explain, but, as i said, a view on a private blog is a worry. I’ll let it be.
