Page Visibility – Password Protected Pages

I am having difficulty with paswords that I am setting on certain pages. The online documentation reads:

“WordPress will prompt you for the password on your initial visit to a protected page. After entering the password that first time, we’ll securely store the password with the browser you viewed it with so you won’t have to enter it again.”

I have users that are prompted for the passwords. They enter the correct password but are prompted for the passwords again. I have purged cookies, temp internet files and refreshed their browser and still the same problem. When I make the page public, they are still prompted for a password. HELP!

If WordPress stores the password intially in the browers files and I as the admin, change the password, would the last password be incorrectly used when the user tried to access the page again? How does WordPress recognize that the password has changed and it needs to reach out to the user for entry.

  • What is the URL of the page they’re having trouble accessing?

    The main url is

    http://www.campandsing.com

They click on Members on the main tab and are asked for the password which they enter correctly from their IE browser. I cleared cookies and cache to make sure we were dealing with a clean slate. When they enter the correct password, the password page presents itself again and does not let them in.

There have been a few reports of odd sign-in issues over the past 24 hours. I’ve seen them myself, but only on ONE of my blogs.

  • Oh, you’re using a forwarded domain, which confuses most browsers when site-specific cookies are involved (like password-protected posts/pages).

If they do this through http://harmonyranch.wordpress.com/ they’ll have no problem.

If you want to use the domain with proper functionality, you’ll need to map it: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Thank you very much for this quick answer. It explains the problems that I have been experiencing. I will go the cheap route and publish the direct wordpress url for those who want to get into the password protected pages on the site. Otherwise, the original domain we use will remain in force for all other visits.
