Posts are the dynamic heart of your blog: The articles you write on your home / front page. The front page is not a page you can edit: it is the place where your posts appear. You can tag or categorize posts to help potential readers find articles of interest to them. WordPress sends notifications to search engines when you make a new post. Readers can subscribe to your blog and get RSS feed when you write a post.
Pages are for static information, like an about page. Information that doesn’t change but would be useful for your readers to know. Pages can not be tagged or categorized. Readers are not notified if you write a new page.

Hi 1tess
Could you advise? You say that ‘readers can subscribe to your blog and get RSS feed when you write a post’ – which is something I’ve been puzzled about. Do I need to do anything to enable anyone to subscribe to my blog if they wish, or is this facility available automatically to anyone out there once the blog is created?
Thanks ever so.x

@dbennision, some themes have RSS links built right into them, but the theme you are using does not. What you can do it to add the RSS links widget to your sidebar and it will give links to your RSS feeds: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/rss-links-widget/ .

Thanks so much thesacredpath. I’ve done that – is it right that when you click on the RSS feed it brings up whatever the latest post is?

What shows in your RSS feed depends on your settings at settings > reading. You can set the number of posts you want to show in your feed. You can also set whether you want a summary to show in it or the complete post.

Pages are more for static pages of the site, like contact us, about, sitemap and these kind.
Posts are more of news pages, the kind that is updating on a regular basis.
That is how I use the pages and posts.

Ok, but my “attributes” says: You can arrange your pages in hierarchies, for example you could have an “About” page that has “Life Story” and “My Dog” pages under it. There are no limits to how deeply nested you can make pages.
I did added a new page and a page under it, but the latter doesn’t appear if I click on the parent page. Please advise something if you can.

Child pages do not appear on parent pages in almost all themes.
