Page widget sorts, but header doesn’t!

  • Unknown's avatar

How do I get the header links to sort like the page widget. They’re out of order… I’m using Greenery theme. No matter what I do, they don’t sort…
And is it possible to remove/rename the Home link? I’ve got the start page going to my Welcome page, but it still leaves a Home link!

    PS. I’m new to WordPress!

To change the order of the page tabs in the header, you go to Page Editor > Attributes, and assign an order number to each page. Don’t forget to click Update.

It’s possible that one of your pages is the original “About” page supplied by the theme, just renamed: that page won’t behave. In that case, copy its content, delete it, and create a new one.

As for the “Home” tab, no you can’t remove it – it’s built into the theme. There are two solutions: either make “Welcome” a child page (only parent pages show up in the header) or switch to another theme with no built-in Home tab.

By the way, what’s the point in having your page links in both the header and the sidebar? The only case you need that is if you have child pages. Otherwise you can remove the pages widget, or you can switch to a theme with no header tabs.

My intention was not really to have both – I thought I had to add the Pages widget to get the header order to work (which isn’t reordered using the method you suggest, BTW). It seems that this template does not reorder the header at all using the Page Order option. The Pages widget reorders fine.
I like the Greenry template because it suits my blog subject – family trees / genealogy.
Unless anyone knows a better template for such a subject?

    1. As I said, you don’t need the Pages widget if you don’t have child pages. Keep in mind that widgets are for SIDEBAR (or bottombar) items – nothing to do with the header.

    2. Your template DOES reorder the header page tabs (I tested it before answering). If it didn’t work, then you either forgot to click “Update Page” or used wrong numbers. (Also pay attention to my note on the About page.)

I don’t know how you managed it. I’ve tried everything… Checking the source code for the front page, it appears to order the header links in the order the pages are created (page-id ?), _not_ the order I select.

yeah, that feature just doesn’t work for me either. I don’t know why its even there anymore if it doesn’t work for some of us.

Looks like I might need to change the theme then – shame, it suits my subject… or change to another blog site!!

@aw1923: Tried it in Sandbox 10, and it works…

@stbaldock: “it appears to order the header links in the order the pages are created”. Then you found a way to order them: copy their content, delete them, and create them again in the order you want them!

  • Unknown's avatar

Putting them in the order I created them is not ordering at all! And what a solution! Supposing I edit later & want to reorder them…! And how are any postings already affected… would I need to grab _everything_?

  • Unknown's avatar

“And what a solution!” You’re right of course – I just suggested it as a possible makeshift, not as a good solution.

Anyway your question means you’re considering it. If you do it, then since you’ve got things such as italics and links in your pages, you should copy the complete content from the HTML editor, not the visual. If you paste it in a simple text editor (NOT WORD!), then paste it again in the html editor of a newly created page, everything will be the same as before.

(But looking for another suitable template might be better.)

Was your test on a self-hosted system? Maybe that’s the difference, since aw1923 said that some people have problems, and others don’t ?!

  • Unknown's avatar

@stbaldock: Of course not – we forum volunteers always point out that self-hosted bloggers shouldn’t be here!

It can also be the browser (Explorer is bad, and WP doesn’t recommended it) or the computer (different versions of applications): I’m a Mac user.

  • Unknown's avatar

How on earth can WP not recommend IE? I’ve heard of things the other way around, but to alienate 90% of the Windows market because their templates don’t work in the system browser seems stupid….. And before anyone rants, I am not interested in other people’s opinions of Microshaft…
Nevertheless, I’ll try to view it in FF3… watch this space!

  • Unknown's avatar

… nope! doesn’t work properly in that either! Either bad template, or bugged WP 2.7 !! I’m going right of this stuff!

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s not the templates, it’s IE in general – especially IE6 (Microsoft itself advises abandoning IE6). And you don’t really alienate anyone: you can use more than one browsers (I use three).

  • Unknown's avatar

It can’t just be IE – as I said, it doesn’t display the header in the right order in FF either! And I’m already using IE7 anyway.

  • Unknown's avatar

I meant that in general, not re this particular problem. Anyway that detail is not worth all this trouble: if what you liked in Greenery was the tree image, you can switch to any other theme with a custom image header and upload any suitable image (INCLUDING the one from Greenery).

Not using sandbox 10 Im using the other sandbox which is just called “sandbox”. Either way I have tried this in the contempt and andreas09 theme and it still didn’t work

  • Unknown's avatar

@aw1923: I’m baffled – just tried it with Contempt and Andreas09, and it WORKS.

  • Unknown's avatar

I just tried it on my blog (old Sandbox) and it works perfectly. I followed the instructions here: http://support.wordpress.com/pages/6/
