I need to have each of my pages work like a blog. If I upgrade to premium can I do that?

I am a teacher creating a site for me to curate articles, photographs and videos of current events for my students to use in my classes. But I need each page to work like a blog, so when I add something new, I can tag it, categorize it and an email goes out to the students.

    Can you help?

    Thanks,

    Gretchen

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Gretchen!

I don’t believe you need to upgrade to Premium to accomplish what you’re looking for. Just to clarify, we’re talking about apartofoneworld.wordpress.com – correct? It looks like you have separate categories in your menu up top as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/19b5m

I’m guessing that you would like to categorize posts based on those topics and then have only the applicable posts come up when someone clicks on the tab. Is that correct? If so, you’ll want to setup category pages as shown here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

Can you give that a try?

Regarding the subscription, I would suggest using the Follow Blog widget described here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/

When readers enter their email into that form (or click “Follow” if they’re logged into WordPress.com), they’ll automatically receive all of your new posts.

Hi – actually what I am doing is taking articles I find on the internet and place them on my pages – according to their content (inequality etc.) I want to place them on a page and then when I find a new one, place it on top of the last as if they were blog posts – so that when people (my students or others) follow – they will be alerted to when something new comes up.

Yes I know about the follow blog widget, I took it down as it made no sense if nothing will ever be sent to anyone since only the first page is a blog and that is the only page that will stay static.

So can I make the pages like blog post pages?

    Thanks,

    Gretchen

    Hi Gretchen,

actually what I am doing is taking articles I find on the internet and place them on my pages – according to their content (inequality etc.) I want to place them on a page and then when I find a new one, place it on top of the last as if they were blog posts – so that when people (my students or others) follow – they will be alerted to when something new comes up.

Thanks for explaining a bit more! I think the category pages will still work for what you’re looking for. I created an example to show how this would work. In my example, I have a home page and then a category called “Sports.” This would be synonymous with your topics like Inequality, Health, etc. In the menu, I put a Category page called “Sports” as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/eX5D

Category pages are a bit different than normal pages in that they automatically update like blogs. The URL is also a bit different:

    https://callitluck.wordpress.com/category/sports/

When clicked, that page displays all posts in the “Sports” category with the newest posts at the top. When someone clicks the link title to read more, they’ll see a short synopsis of the article with a link to the full article like this:

    http://d.pr/i/105AI

So, when you find a link that you want to share, you would create a new post, include a short synopsis of why you found it helpful (not necessary), and then categorize the post in the correct category. Then, subscribers to your site would receive new emails for every new post you create (every new link you share).

Does that sound like what you’re looking for?

  • Unknown's avatar

That sounds good. I’ll give it a try and get back to you.

    Thank you!

Sounds great Gretchen! If you need any help, please let me know.

Ok – so I go to widgets and add categories to my widgets? How do I make them pages? Can you walk me through how to set this up?

    Thanks,

    Gretchen

    Hi Gretchen!

If I understand the overall mission correctly, I don’t think we’ll want to add these under widgets. We’re trying to get these category pages to show up here:

    http://d.pr/i/1eAZn

    Is that correct?

If so, we’ll want to create a custom menu here:

    https://apartofoneworld.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

Right now, you’ll see a menu with all of your pages. We’ll need to switch them out for category pages (slightly different). To do that, follow these steps:

    1. Start on the page linked above.

    2. Click the small drop-down arrow next to one of your current pages:

    http://d.pr/i/10DUS

    3. Click the “Delete” link. This won’t delete the page; it just removes the page from your menu.

    4. On the left-hand side of the page, expand the categories menu. Check the box next to the category we want to add (the same name as the page we just deleted) and add that category to your menu. These steps are shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/14dmV

    5. Drag and drop that new category page into the correct position in your menu. You’ll be able to tell the difference between the category pages and regular pages because the former will read “Category” as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/1cfie

    6. Repeat steps 2-5 for all of your pages.

    7. Click “Create Menu”.

Let me know once you’ve finished these steps!

    Great instructions, thanks.

I have done each step. But I want to add categories. How do I do that without going into widgets?

And then next steps. Thanks so much for your help with this.

    Hi Gretchen!

I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking with this:

I want to add categories. How do I do that without going into widgets?

Are you trying to add more categories like Politics, Education, etc to your site? If so, you can add them here:

    https://apartofoneworld.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

I feel like I might be misunderstanding you though. Could you explain a bit more?

Hi Jeremy. I think I have my categories set up (although Women is still not showing up as a tab – hmm). But now how do I get rid of my Home page static message (Welcome to the World) on every category page? I just did a trial on the Inequality page.

Hi – also – I just posted a new article in the Inequality category but it is showing up on my home page. I need my home page to stay static withe the Welcome to Your World info.

How do I insert articles into each category page without it changing the page, yet still updating anyone who is following?

    Thanks!

It looks like you still need to add the Women category to the menu here:

    https://apartofoneworld.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

Can you give that a try?

I think the best solution is to copy that content into a page instead of a post. Then, you can set the page as your front page following the steps here:

    Set the Homepage

That way, the content wouldn’t appear within the normal flow of your posts. Can you give that a try?

How do I insert articles into each category page without it changing the page, yet still updating anyone who is following?

Once you add a new front page, the front of your site will no longer be updated when you publish a new post. The post will only appear on your designated category pages. Then, the post will also get emailed out to all of your subscribers. We’ll just need to do the front page step first.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok – I made the static front page. Problems:
    1. Front page info is still showing up on all the category pages. Why and how do I get rid of it?

    2. Women is not showing up in the Categories – so I can’t make it a category page. I don’t know why.

Delete the “Welcome to the World!” post from this page:

    https://apartofoneworld.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=post

Just hover over the post title and use the “Trash” link that appears beneath the title like this:

    http://d.pr/i/13dBC

Women is not showing up in the Categories – so I can’t make it a category page. I don’t know why.

Can you make sure you click “View All” as shown here?

    http://d.pr/i/1foCr

It should be at the bottom of that list.

Jeremy, You have been a great help.

One more question – when the email goes out to followers it shows me as the author of the articles (not on the site itself but in the email announcement). Can I remove that? I do not want to claim that. I am trying very hard to make sure the source and writer are very prominent and get full credit.

    One more question:

When I receive an email I get the whole article – not just the first part and then you have to go to the website to read the whole thing. I don’t see where to change it to just a teaser.

Can you show me where? Thanks.

When the email goes out to followers it shows me as the author of the articles (not on the site itself but in the email announcement). Can I remove that?

I’m afraid you cannot remove that. The email is referencing you as the author of the actual post on your site. That cannot be changed to match the author of the post on the site that you’re referencing.

When I receive an email I get the whole article – not just the first part and then you have to go to the website to read the whole thing. I don’t see where to change it to just a teaser.

    You can fix this here:

    https://apartofoneworld.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

Just change the setting for “For each article in feed show” from “Full text” to “Summary.”

Let me know if you need anything else!
