I’m new to this site. How do I move my post to another page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog in reverse chronological order with the most recent post on top. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

Among the most common misconceptions is that bloggers fail to understand is
    (1) there is only one page we can post to in any blog and
    (2) the static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ they create do not automatically update.

Please read this support doc as Pages and posts http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ are not the same.

Please also read this support doc as Pages (static) https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ and category pages (dynamic) https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/ are not the same.

Only the dynamic pages like Categories, Tags and Archives created by the software when we publish a post we that we have assigned Categories and Tags to will update automatically update. https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus

Please read this carefully http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/posts-on-pages/ There are many common errors, misunderstandings and misconceptions when creating custom menus and there are some tweaks you can use to improve your custom menu as well. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

I just checked https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/ and I see that you have several posts and the custom menu you created has several pages in it. What you probably want instead is a static front page and category menu items in the custom menu. I can help walk you through how to get that setup.

If what I described above sounds like what you want to do, here are some next steps you can follow:

    1. Go to https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page and make a new page that you will use for your static front page

    2. Go to Settings > Reading, select the “A static front page” option and select the page you just published in step 1 for the “Front page” option

    3. Go to https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=publish&post_type=post and update the categories for your published posts (right now all the published posts are “Uncategorized”)

    4. Go to https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php?action=edit&menu=345055949 and remove all of the menu items you added before, then add them back as category menu items using the “Categories” section on the left

If that doesn’t sound like what you wanted to do, reply back here with more details about your end goal and I will try to help. Note that the steps above have to be completed in order or they won’t work correctly.

I think I figured that out. Thanks! What does the categories section mean? Another question is can I have submenus? For example, from the TV show menu, I have How I Met Your Mother there multiple times for each episode. It would be easier to group it into one ‘HIMYM’ section.

What does the categories section mean?

On the menus page, the categories section is the section you can use to add a category page to your menu.

Another question is can I have submenus?

Yes. To create a submenu just drag the menu item over to the right just a little and it should snap into place a little to the right. It looks like you may have already figured this part out.

I checked your menus page at https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php and I see you created 10 new menus. You really only need one!

Here is the direct link for “Menu 10”
    https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php?action=edit&menu=345400552

For example, from the TV show menu, I have How I Met Your Mother there multiple times for each episode.

It looks like you were able to create a submenu named “How I Met Your Mother” under “TV Show Reviews” but you added the menu item as a “post” and not a “category.”

When I look at this post:
    http://thehypepage.com/2012/11/04/how-i-met-your-mother-karma/

I see that it has the category “TV Show Reviews” and the tags “How I Met Your Mother, Karma, Neil Patrick Harris, TV Show Review.”

So, in your menu, one possible way to set it up would be to delete the “How I Met Your Mother” menu item and then use tags section (since “How I Met Your Mother” is a tag on that post) to add a tag menu item named “How I Met Your Mother” instead. Try that first and see if it makes sense. If yes, let’s continue from there if you still need help.

Thanks for your help so far! I need help on a few more things. I want to know how to link my Menus to my submenus. For example, the ‘daily themes’ menu has no content on it when you click it but when you click any of the submenus, the content appears. Why is that? How can I change that so all the posts in the submenus also appears on the page too?

Next question, has to do with the home page (static page). I would like some advice on what to include there since it is the first thing people see on the site. Maybe what I can do to jazz it up since it looks somewhat boring, right now? I don’t want to give out much personal information either since it is a worldwide blog. Thanks!

For example, the ‘daily themes’ menu has no content on it when you click it but when you click any of the submenus, the content appears. Why is that?

I went to http://thehypepage.com/ and hovered over “Blog” then clicked the “Daily Themes” submenu and I see two posts there. So I bet you updated your menu after you asked your question and got this sorted out. If you’re still having trouble with the part where there’s no content when you click on a menu item, let me know which one and I’ll take another look.

How can I change that so all the posts in the submenus also appears on the page too?

This will happen automatically if you setup the Category hierarchy to match the menu hierarchy. It’s a bit of extra work! But I do see you’ve already gotten it setup correctly. For example, I can see that you set “Daily Themes” as the parent of the “Music Monday” category here:
    https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?action=edit&taxonomy=category&tag_ID=1433472&post_type=post

That means that when you view the Daily Themes category page at http://thehypepage.com/category/daily-themes/ that you will see all posts with the category “Daily Theme” or “Music Monday” there.

I would like some advice on what to include there since it is the first thing people see on the site. Maybe what I can do to jazz it up since it looks somewhat boring, right now?

I’d say the home page could be pretty simple. You could include a blurb about the site and how people can get involved.

Some of the tips here for an About page could also apply to your home page:
    https://dailypost.wordpress.com/2012/11/28/aboutpage/

Aside: I noticed you have approved several spammy comments. You can tell they are spam by looking at the links to the usernames. Here’s a really obvious one where the text and the link both looks spammy:
    http://thehypepage.com/comment-page-1/#comment-16

When you see spam like that, you should mark it as spam on the comment page and not approve or reply to it. Or if you are not sure if something is spam and want to keep it, you can also just delete the link while editing the comment.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sorry I’m I’m approving spammy comments. I thought some of them were actual comments on the website/blog but went straight to the spam folder. Tell me more about it so I can catch it before it hits my page. I will delete what I think is spammy comments from my page before continuing to work on the About and Home pages.

  • Unknown's avatar

No need to be sorry! The best way to tell is by looking at the link to the username when you review the comment. If it’s selling something or looks like a site that’s just made to show a ton of ads, then the comment is probably spam. Spammers are clever, so sometimes it’s hard to tell them apart from nice people in the world. :) If there’s a comment you like but aren’t sure about it, you can always just delete the link and keep the rest of the comment.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok thanks Sheri for clearing that up for me! I like some of the comments even if it is spam. I just don’t want my readers clicking on spam and then losing their interest. Some feedback is better than none. Some of the comments in my folders have names and some say blah blah reviews or whatever. I don’t want to have any viruses from dealing with spam either.

Next question I had is do successful blogs brand their sites? I’m looking at paying a Graphic Designer to put together a custom logo for my site along with social media pages too. I have an advertising/marketing background so I know how to market…just need to make sure it is ready to market. I might team up with related established blog to gain subscribers. I’m going live next Wednesday (my birthday)…Is it missing anything?

Thanks for all your help so far! :)

Next question I had is do successful blogs brand their sites?

I think so, but how much will depend a lot on your target audience and your budget. When you talk to a graphic designer, make sure you feel comfortable that they want to provide you with the best value for your goals. Try to be detailed with them when you explain your business goals and how you expect the website to help.

The logo is done and costs me $30 (not including tip). The designer did a great job on it! Feel free to check it out.

I also got my first official non-spam comment, it went straight to my email rather than my spam filters.

    Good tips thus far.

Is there a way to make sure certain widgets go to certain pages? I’m struggling with that. By the way, I’m still not live yet.

  • Unknown's avatar

I looked at the site and I see that you setup a new featured image for the home page and it’s getting cut off in an odd way. You might want to try out that image in the site logo setting instead. To do that, go to https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php and click on Site Title, you should see a logo option inside that panel that you can try out.

Is there a way to make sure certain widgets go to certain pages?

You can use widget visibility settings for that. Here is the help page showing how they work:

How do I link Tumblr to my blog without messing up the WordPress blog? I can’t change my Tumblr domain, without needing to change the C-Name or A Record of my WordPress blog. I want to expand my reach through Tumblr by adding my website on there as well. Please help me with this, Sheri. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

You should be able to connect your WordPress.com blog to Tumblr using the Publicize feature. Here are the steps:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#tumblr

  • Unknown's avatar

I followed those steps and it is connected. Thanks…but it still won’t link it from Tumblr to WordPress without changing the Cname. Why is that?

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t change my Tumblr domain, without needing to change the C-Name or A Record of my WordPress blog.

but it still won’t link it from Tumblr to WordPress without changing the Cname. Why is that?

The steps I gave for Tumblr earlier were the steps needed to link a WordPress.com blog to a Tumblr site so that when you add new content on WordPress.com it is also posted to the Tumblr. You don’t need to change the CNAME or A record for that.

If you are trying to connect a custom domain to Tumblr, which is something different, then I misunderstood your question before and you probably would need to update a CNAME or A record according to Tumblr’s support pages for something like that. Apologies if I misunderstood your question before.

  • Unknown's avatar

Not a problem, Sheri! I did the first steps correctly and it linked up just fine. You did misunderstood my question but I didn’t word it right before I didn’t know what I was talking about. I want to connect a custom domain to Tumblr to increase my blog exposure. I have no idea how to do that. Can you point me in the right direction please? So far you have been extremely helpful :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Apologies for the delay.

I want to connect a custom domain to Tumblr to increase my blog exposure.

I still think you might not be thinking of it correctly. So to make sure I understand what it really is that you want, let’s step back and take a closer look as a first step.

You have created a blog on WordPress.com at http://thehypepage.com/

On that blog, the admin domain is thehypepage.wordpress.com and the custom domain is thehypepage.com. Separately, you may have also created a Tumblr—these are two totally separate things. It is possible to setup something called Pubilcize on WordPress.com that will automatically post a snippet from your WordPress.com post to other services such as Tumblr. Making that kind of connection has nothing to do with the custom domain and you can set it up from the Settings > Sharing pages in your dashboard here:
    https://thehypepage.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing

These are the detailed instructions in case you need them:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#tumblr

If that doesn’t sound like what you’re trying to do, write back again and please give a bit more background information and try to use specifics such as the actual blog or domain name to try to clarify things.

  • Unknown's avatar

Don’t worry about the delay! It’s Summer :) I’ve already connected my Tumblr account to WordPress so it is something different. Let me try to get into more detail. I want to use the Tumblr account I created and connect it to the exact blog which is my issue. This is the Tumblr settings part that I’m trying to work with… https://www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/thehypenation
I used a jpeg and text to edit the account but it doesn’t link to any of my posts on my actual blog. The error message I get when I try to link it to a custom domain is: This subdomain’s CNAME is not pointing to Tumblr. Please change the CNAME to: domains.tumblr.com. This is the Tumblr…
    http://thehypenation.tumblr.com/
I hope this clears this up. If not, I would be happy to go into even more detail.
