Hi there, yesterday I began creating my WordPress website and I was watching a YouTube tutorial of how to create a website because I have never used this before. However, my ‘Dashboard’ is set up completely differently to the video (it was made in March 2021) and for some reason I am only able to edit my home page and not the other three pages that I have created. It just says ‘Nothing here’ and I cannot find a way to edit those other three pages. I am not sure if it is the theme I am using (Twenty twenty one) but any help with this would be appreciated?

Most of the videos and so called tutorials you find on the internet are about wordpress.org which differs from our wordpress.com platform. if you are new to wordpress.com, you find usefull info at https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/new-to-wordpress-com-resources-to-get-started/

Hi there,
Can you tell us a bit more about what you’re trying to do?
If you’re trying to edit your pages, you can find all the published pages on your site at Pages ->All Pages. You can edit your pages Home and Back Page Football Articles from there (the page titled Blog can’t be edited, as it’s set as your posts page, so it will automatically display a list of all published blog posts on your site once you start publishing those under Posts ->Add New).

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I want to be a football journalist when I am older and I am trying to use WordPress to showcase all of my writing. The problem I am having is that when I press on the tab I want to edit, there is no indication to say that I can edit that page. However, I previewed my website and I saw an edit button on one of the tabs but when I pressed it just came up with ‘Error.’ In the tutorial video I was watching, they were using WP Admin and I pressed on that button and it showed everything that was in the video. Straight after though, I pressed on ‘Pages’ and everything reset to the original menu. I have something on my homepage but nothing on my other three pages as it just says ‘Nothing here’ and I cannot find a way to edit these pages. Do categories and pages link in with each other because when I create a new category, nothing comes up in pages? Any help with my problem would be greatly appreciated.

Are you speaking of the menu items at the top of your site? Those are all three linking to categories, not pages. When you add a category to your menu like that, clicking that goes to a dynamic page that lists all blog posts/articles you’ve published with that specific category. You don’t have any posts yet, which is why they show Nothing here at the moment.
These archive pages are generated automatically, so you can’t edit them directly and they won’t be listed under Pages. The only way you can change what appears on one of those archive pages, is to add or remove the respective category from individual posts on the site.
To create a new category page, it’s better to first have a published post that’s assigned to that category. Once you have a post assigned to the category, that category will be available to add as a new menu item when you edit your site menu.
https://wordpress.com/en/support/menus/add-categories-to-a-menu/
You can also create the category links in the menu first, as you’ve done, but then you must make sure the categories you assign to your posts match the category you already created exactly.
I hope that clarifies things, but please let me know if you have any other questions :)

When I go to preview my site, at the top it says ‘Edit page’ but when I click on the other three tabs I have, the icon disappears for some reason. In two of my three tabs, I am just looking to add hyperlinks to other websites in a list where my work is displayed. Then the final tab will be a post which I try to put on the website.
When I go onto the ‘Pages’ tab, only one comes up (Home) but when I try and add a page (Back Page Football Articles for example) it doesn’t match up to the link I have on the navigation bar.
Also, I am slightly confused where you have said ‘to add or remove the respective category from individual posts on the site’ as I don’t really understand what you mean by that, is that anything you could do to help me with these issues?
Thank you once again,

Hi there,
I see what you are saying. The home page had the edit button that allows you easy access to edit that particular page, but none of your other pages have the same link.
However, as @kokkieh was mentioning, those tabs are links to categories for posts that do not exist yet. So, when you click on the tabs, that is why you get the
nothing heremessage – there’s technically no post page to edit. Once you publish a post that can go under the category, you’ll be able to click that tab and find a post that will also have the same edit link you see on your home page.Hope that makes sense. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
Thanks!

Hello everyone,
I think I have managed to find a way to use WordPress so I just want to say a big thank you to all of you for helping me.
I am not sure if you are able to view my website on here, but I believe I have figured out how to use WordPress. I do still have some questions which I may need answering if anybody has a free few minutes.
On two of my tabs, it says ‘Category’ before the actual name of the page, is there a way I could remove that?
On Back Page Football Articles and Billericay Town Articles, there are hyperlinks to other websites where my work is on show. For some reason, you have to press Articles and then there is a list but when you first press on the page, all of the text is together. Is there a way to have the hyperlinks on show straight away instead of having to press another link to view the hyperlinks?
Thanks again,
Jack -

That is how category archive pages work. Similarly tag archive pages will say “Tag:” before the tag name, and author archive pages will say “Author:” before the author name.
To remove that label, you’ll have to override your theme’s design. You can do that using custom CSS code on our Pro plan:

I assume you’re speaking of https://jpjournalismcom.wordpress.com/category/back-page-football-articles/, which is linked in your menu, correct?
That is a category archive page, as we’ve explained above. The “Articles” heading you see on that page is a blog post. If you click that, you get taken to the single-post view of that blog post at https://jpjournalismcom.wordpress.com/2022/04/22/articles/
Archive pages in your theme only show an excerpt of blog posts in that category, so what you’re seeing is expected, and how the theme is designed to work.
If you don’t want it to work this way, you shouldn’t be using a category page and a blog post, but instead you need to add those links directly to a regular page under Pages ->Add New in your menu. Then you add that regular page to your site menu instead of the category, like you currently have.
You can see an overview of the difference between blog posts and pages here:

Let us know if you have any more questions about this :)

Hi there,
The vast majority of my website is complete but I still have one slight problem.
I would like my ‘Interviews’ tab to have an excerpt (which it does), and my other two tabs to be made as ‘full post.’
However, when I go and change one of the tabs to ‘full post’ another one of my tabs will reset but I don’t know why. This means that I cannot have my ‘Billericay Town Articles’ and ‘Back Page Football Articles’ as full posts which I want them to be.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix it, please?
Also, I have put the link below to my website so you understand what I mean –

The three tabs in your menu are all three category archive pages, and they’re all controlled by the Archive template in the site editor.
So any change to that template will affect all three those category pages the same, including switching them between full post and excerpt.
In other words, you can’t have one category page show full posts, and another category page show excerpts.
If you want only one to have excerpts, I recommend you don’t use a category page for that. Instead, create a regular page titled Interviews under Pages ->Add New, and add that to your menu instead of the current category link.
Inside that page, add the Blog Posts block. You can set that block to only show posts from your Interviews category, and to only show excerpts of the posts:
