    Volunteers cannot view private blogs.

Are you referring to Pages or to Posts? The two are not the same http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. The only way that can be changed is by setting a static front page.
If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.

To do that create two pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

    Front page displays
    __ Your latest posts

    A static page (select below)
    Front page:
    Posts page:

If that’s not what you mean and you are referring to Pages and you have other Pages that are not displaying I suggest you go to > Dashboard > Pages > All Pages and hover over the Page titles then click “edit” and check the page visibility settings in the Publish module.

Troubleshooting – My Pages aren’t appearing
They must be public pages – not private.
Public – The page will be visible to everyone.
Protected – The page is protected with a password you set. Only people who have the password can view a protected page.
Private – Pages are only visible to blog Editors and Administrators. Private pages are not visible in Reader, feeds, or in any search. A page can be private without being password protected.

If you created a custom menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ then you can add Pages to it and create the order you want.

P.S. Also note that Pages that are not published but are in draft form will not appear for selection and inclusion into a custom menu.

Have you published the pages? The pages will not show up if they are not yet published, or if they are set to “private.”

If you also have a lot of pages, you will likely have to click the “view all” link at the top of the pages module on the appearance > menus page.

ok thank you for this— they are pages for a website and were not published so were not showing up for selection into a custom menu as you pointed out time thief.

when I publish, does that mean it’s now gone live? I don’t want it to be public yet as I”m still working on content

tks for your help with this….i’m on a learning curve here :) and will likely run into more challenges

When you make a blog private there is not need to make each post and page private. Don’t do that or you will have a huge editing job later. When you change the blog visibility from private to public http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/ that’s all you need to do and when you do all published pages and posts will be available.
