Pages not showing up to be added to menu

    Hello,

I am trying to add the pages of my site to a menu to make navigating the site easier. Currently, the only way to go to different pages on my site is to scroll to the bottom and click on one of the page numbers (1-30). This works alright on desktop, but on mobile the page numbers beyond 9 do not even show up on the screen (18 if you turn your phone sideways).

I wanted to add the pages to the menu to give mobile users a simpler option, but when I go to add pages to the menu the only two pages are the front page and one called “blog” which I have not used for anything. The other pages do not show up.

My site is published and public. Other people have confirmed that they can view all the pages if they click on the numbers at the bottom, so none of the pages can be private. I have seen in similar questions on this forum where that was the problem, but I don’t see how it could be so in my case.

    Please help.

Sorry, I just realized that there is an error in my original post. The link posted is NOT the blog I need help with. The blog I need help with is: ultimatexmenreadingorder.com

  • Hi there,

Are you speaking of the page numbers appearing at the bottom of the front page? And this is for https://ultimatexmenreadingorder.com/, rather than http://ghostlists.wordpress.com/, correct?

Those aren’t actual pages, and they won’t appear under the Pages heading when you make a custom menu, no.

Those page numbers are simply pagination for your front page which you added to split the page into multiple sections. But they’re all still the same page.

If you want to add those page break links to the menu, you’ll have to copy them manually (right click ->Copy link), and then add them to the menu as Custom Links:

    https://wordpress.com/support/menus/add-links-to-a-menu/#types-of-menu-items

That said, I not sure this is the best way to go about it.

If you want to use pages for this, rather than posts, I’d suggest you create completely separate pages instead, rather than a single page subdivided into 30 sections. Then you’ll be able to add them to the menu under Pages, and you’ll even be able to use the Page List block to create an index of all the pages inside the content of your front page.

But if it were my site, I’d publish the content as blog posts instead, publishing maybe one a week. 30 posts is more than half a year’s worth of content, and it will allow people to discover your site in the Reader and subscribe so they’re notified the next time a new post goes up. That also makes it much simpler to add new content further down the line.

If you want to have an index of your posts, you can then use the Latest Posts block to just list the titles of your posts on your front page.

By using pages as you’re doing now, people won’t find your site via the WordPress.com Reader. So the only way anyone will know about your site is if the direct link is shared with them, or if they come across it in Google, and Google gives preference to posts over pages, and to recently updated content over content published a while ago. If you only use pages, and you publish all the content now and then never post updates again, your site is very unlikely to ever rank highly in Google search results.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

    Thank you!

I changed everything to seperate pages and I now have a drop-down menu that makes the site much easier to navigate on both desktop and mobile. I added links to the bottom of each page as well so that people can click previous and next when they are at the bottom.

I appreciate the information about making blog posts to make the site more popular on Google, however, I have already announced this site to people and the premise is that it is up-to-date. I don’t want to renege on that and stretch my pages out as blog posts over the next 30 weeks. Additionally, this is not a site I plan to update frequently – due to the nature of the content, it won’t need to be updated more than about once a year, maybe even less. As such, it’s probably not going to rank highly in Google anyway, unless people are searching for this specific type of thing. I’m going to have to depend on word of mouth and sharing, but I have posted it on Reddit in a community of interested people, so hopefully that will help.

Anyway, your response was exactly what I needed. Have a great day!
