Pages not updating in browser. Cacheing? 'Personal Plan'
-
Hi All,
I have to say, I’m disappointed with this wordpress.com site solution that I recommended my friend use.I love the self-hosted WP myself (apart from the Gutenberg editor).
He’s not at all web-technical and is finding that his pages aren’t updating in the browser when he makes changes. I can’t find any way of switching off site-cacheing. Perhaps this is yet another thing that can’t be done with a Personal Plan? He already feels like throwing in the towel in and going back to a GoDaddy drag and drop website.
I myself am irritated when I make changes in the editor, save, and a message pops up saying there’s a cached version in the browser. I haven’t a clue how I’m supposed to react to this message. It’s kind of confusing or meaningless.
Can anyone help me out with some advice please? I’ll really appreciate it.
I’m using the Singl theme.
John

Hi John,
is finding that his pages aren’t updating in the browser when he makes changes.
Can you provide your friend’s site’s URL? And what type of changes is he making that isn’t updating?
While WordPress.com sites, like most other websites, cache certain data in a browser when someone visits the site in order to conserve bandwidth, that caching does not apply to content of posts and pages created in the editor. When you make a change in the editor and click the Update button, those changes should reflect on the public version of the page immediately (or once you refresh if you had the public version open in a separate browser tab while making changes).
If that’s not happening on your friend’s site, it would be best if they contacted us themselves so we can troubleshoot the issue with them directly.
Switching off caching on a website is not recommended – that would significantly increase bandwidth usage on both the server and on the site visitor’s end, severely slow down your site, and potentially ruin your SEO, and we don’t offer any option to disable caching on WordPress.com.
I myself am irritated when I make changes in the editor, save, and a message pops up saying there’s a cached version in the browser.
Do you mean the message that says there’s a previous auto-saved version of the post?
When you open an existing post for editing, the editor constantly auto-saves in the background, so that should your browser crash or you accidentally close the tab, your changes won’t be lost. If you’re seeing that on a post, what most likely happened is that you opened the post for editing at one point, but then closed it without clicking Update. So the next time you opened the post, it indicated there’s an autosaved version from before. But if you don’t want to go back to that previous autosaved version, you can just ignore that notice, and make the new edits you want.
These autosaves are stored on our servers, not in the browser cache.
If you’re specifically seeing a message mentioning the browser cache, I’d appreciate if you can take a screen shot of that for me and upload it to your media library so I can take a look at it. I’ve never seen such a notice on WordPress.com myself, so I suspect that might not be coming from our end.

We’re both finding that if we edit a post, it doesn’t necessarily update for a good while. And… a Post that’s in the Page ‘News’ for example, doesn’t necessarily show on the home page for a good while (the News page is Pulled into the Homepage)Yesterday I viewed these in a different Browser and it seemed fine, So I suspected browser cacheing, but I tried clearing the browser cache without any luck. There’s no browser cacheing message that appears.
This morning, over 10 hours later, I see it’s all fine.

Thanks for explaining the Editor pop-up Previously Saved Post message. That makes perfect sense to me now. It’s specifically in relation to the post in the editor only.Any thoughts?

Hello there,
Many thanks for that information. From the get go, it’s always useful for the user themselves to reach out for help here: https://wordpress.com/help/contact as we can get back to them in real time.

As you say, this sounds like caching. If this is experienced, I’d recommend clearing the browser cache: https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache
It’s also worth clearing cookies as well.
To also rule out caching, it’s worth checking the site on a different connection, as the ISP could also be doing some caching there.
