hi
could i please ask if someone could tell me the difference between adding pages or posts, i would like to add a place on my blog where i can put my art but the rest of the blog is completely different, would a page do it? I want it to be listed in the categories and only interested people would visit and none of the others would see it if not clicked into it..The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, stevebeard50! Excellent question.
There are several differences between posts and pages. most notably that pages can be hierarchical (www.website.com/main-page/child-page) whereas posts are not but can be organized using categories and tags (www.website.com/category/category-name).
Here you will find more detailed explanation.
if you need to separate your art the rest of your content you may be interested in having a look a the “Portfolio” post type. This is a third type of post (pages, posts and portfolios) which is aimed at visual content (photography, illustration, art) and has its own categories, separate from the standard Post categories. Also there are several “Portfolio ready” themes available that will make your content look amazing.
My suggestion is you could use Portfolios for your art and posts for the regular “standar” blogposts.
Please let me know if that helped.
Good luck! -
Also, if you want to keep it really simple you could just add a new page for your art, insert a gallery and then add it to the main menu. That way it would be separated from your posts. You could do this with multiple pages for each of your art pieces.
The main drawback of this approach, as opposed to using Porfolios, is that your would not be able to organize your artwork by category in order to filter it and create lists, but I am suggesting it as an alternative because it is a lot simpler.
Again, please let me know how it went.

Thank you so much, beautifully explained in a manner even i can understand, i will indeed look into the portfolio approach.
Once again thank you.. -
As an aside, i have just been to my site and all i can see is post or page, it doesn’t mention portfolio pages, would this mean i have to upgrade my package?

Hi! I´m glad I could help, stevebeard50.
Fortunately “Portfolios” does not require any upgrade, all you need to do is activate it going to My Sites → Settings → Writing → Content Types, here you will find a more detailed explanation.
Once you activate it your portfolios will show in this URL:
http://stevebeard50.blog/portfolio/As an extra, there is a very hand way to display your portfolio lists anywhere you like (any post, page, or even inside a widget) using the [portfolio] shortcode. It admits lots of parameters, for example:
[portfolio display_types=true display_tags=false include_type=example-category-name columns=2 showposts=10 orderby=title]
Read more about using portfolio shortcodes here.
Good luck!
