Pages, sub pages and sidebars….
-
I’m currently in the process of moving my blogger blog over to wordpress.com in order to create a more professional looking site as a result of increased interest and traffic, but am really struggling with a few things.
1. I understand how to create pages and sub-pages. However, what I am ATTEMPTING (and failing) to do, is create multiple CATEGORIES: i.e The Girls Are category, with ‘About’ and ‘Contact’ as sub-pages, then a Features category with ‘Reviews’ and ‘Interviews’ as sub pages). I’ve found that I can create a parent page, with multiple sub pages, but I don’t actually WANT the parent page to be an actual page, and I cannot order categorise the sub-pages: I’d like a category header, and then sub-pages underneath. I know it is possible because this site does it: http://wearsthetrousers.com/
Does anyone have any suggestions?? Before I go live with the site, I want to sort these things out, otherwise I have as well have just stayed on blogger.
2. I am using the Benevolence theme, and I have paid for the CSS upgrade in order to modify certain elements in order to adhere to my branding. I’d like the sidebar to be on the right, rather than the left. However, when I change the CSS to “float: right”, the sidebar does move to the right, but appears to ‘overlap’ the border. I know I need to amend SOMETHING within the code to stop this happening, but no matter what I try, there always seems to be an overhang on the right hand side.
3. After paying for the CSS upgrade, my custom header image no longer appears on the page. Why???
I’ve spent the last four hours trawling through forums, and nothing details answers to the above problems.
Help!!!

(1) Page tabs as external links
There are two themes that do allow the option of placing the Categories where the static Pages are normally displayed ie. across the horizontal menu at the top of the blog. They are Inove and Monochrome. There is a trick that can be used on some themes to achieve the same thing. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/page-tabs-as-external-links/
(2) The CSS upgrade is not recommended to those who lack CSS editing experience and are unable to work independently, as there is no Staff support for learning CSS. We have a couple of volunteers who will help when they can. You will have to be patient waiting for them to locate this thread and reply to it.
(3) Header
Once you edit the CSS you can no longer upload headers.

Thanks for the speedy response!
1. The blog I used as an example uses the same theme that I do: they’ve managed to achieve this, so there HAS to be a way to do it, without linking to other web pages??
2. Noted – I have a basic knowledge of CSS, and am largely self-taught but I do need someone who can finesse my slightly awkward moves. However, the themes are so ridiculously limited on WordPress.com that if you have existing branding and want to use the platform, you need to amend some details!
3. Thanks so much for that header link!
That’s massively helpful. -
