Pages vs categories – for a newbie

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog is a chronicle of a long trip and I would like to know how to break it up into parts so it doesn’t get too long.

    1. Would you recommend pages or categories, or is there another option that would be better?

    2. What is the best way for a reader to see these parts and navigate to them? Create a menu?

    Thank you.

You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.

This support forum is for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. If your question is about a self-hosted WordPress blog then you’ll find help at the WordPress.org forums.

If you don’t understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, you may find this information helpful.

If you forgot to include a link to your blog, you can reply and include it below. It’ll help people to answer your question.

I should have said *will be a chronicle of a trip so I don’t have a a blog address yet.

Please read the information from the friendly supportbot before you start a blog: There is a significant difference between wordpress.COM and wordpress.ORG.

This is weird. I have read the supportbot two times now. I am on the
WordPress.com forum, because I am using WordPress.com. I am not dumb. Is anybody going to answer my question???

Not until you give us the URL of the blog. If you don’t have a blog, you’re not using WordPress.com, you’re just posting in the forum here.

Excuse me, but my question is of a general nature and goes to the structure of my blog. Can I get a moderator to allow this question? I don’t see what harm it does to this forum to know in advance how I will put my blog together. I’m basically trying to get an idea of the following: 1) are pages and categories fundamentally the same and 2) logically would it make more sense to use pages for the chronology of a trip and 3) is the method of using menus essentially the same for pages and categories? That’s all I want to know. — OP

Please, understand that we see quite a few people from wp.ORG mistakenly coming to this forum.

This is a peer to peer forum for the most part and we are volunteers, your fellow bloggers. Answers and advice for wp.COM do not (neccessarily) apply to the folks from .ORG. There have been many times when a volunteer has spent quite a bit of time over several days helping someone only to find out that the person is using a wp.ORG software.

I’d suggest you just start a test blog and work through this tutorial just so you have some idea about how our platform works:
    http://learn.wordpress.com/

    Also study the Support Documents:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

You are also asking for an opinion. I’d recommend using categories to organize your posts. Then make a custom menu to allow readers to navigate through your blog. Use pages for such info as where you are planning, an about page, etc.

But you could set up a sort of chronological index of your posts by making a custom menu to use in a menu widget.

Or you could use a static page and an archives shortcode to list all of your posts in order.

Or use a combination of these possibilities.

    Best wishes on your blogging!

I appreciate the information and also that you were supportive. Will take your advice and will throw together a test blog I can play with. Best regards — OP

Yes. Getting hands on experience will allow you to set up in a way suited to your personal style. At least that is how it works for me (LOL).

If you have specific questions feel free to start a new thread. (we will hope you have a link, too ≥^!^≤

You see, the answer is completely different for the .org and .com sites.

Raincoaster, in my opinion you are not contributing anything to this thread. You have not provided anything that is helpful, either from a technical standpoint or from a friendliness standpoint. You are a member, same as me. You might want to think about this next time you post.
