Pages with PDFs won’t load
-
Since I missed the renewal payment of my paid site last week (I was sick in bed and didn’t really know the date) three pages on my free site have stopped loading. The three are the only pages on the site that include PDF docs. I’ve now paid the renewal on the other site but the 3 pages on the free site are still not loading. I’ve emptied cache, cleared history and turned the computer off and on twice, but this hasn’t helped. Something is really weird because the pages load on my other devices (2014 MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad) that are not logged into WordPress just not on my 2023 MacBook Pro, whether logged in to WordPress or not…which, I suspect means this isn’t actually a WordPress problem?
I want to keep this site free as it’s my family history site which I hope to remain after I leave the planet. As an elderly OAP, I’m not being melodramatic…just realistic.
The three pages are…

Hi there,
Something is really weird because the pages load on my other devices (2014 MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad) that are not logged into WordPress just not on my 2023 MacBook Pro, whether logged in to WordPress or not…which, I suspect means this isn’t actually a WordPress problem?
Yes this issue does sound specific to that computer. Out of curiosity are you using Safari as your browser?
Usually, when an issue like this occurs, it can be traced to an expired (or broken) login auth cookie stored on your local web browser. With this in mind I would like you to try the following:
- clear your cache and cookies based on the steps Apple recommends here: https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/clear-your-browsing-history-sfri47acf5d6/mac
- Also make sure the “block all cookies” setting is un-checked under Safari > Settings > Privacy
- If you continue to have loading issues after completing those steps, I would like you to try another browser instead, like Firefox or Chrome. Are you able to proceed if you use a browser other than Safari?
Thanks for the additional info!

Thank you so much for your reply totoro. Yes, I’m a Mac groupie and only use Safari. I tried your 3 steps and found the pages download just fine in Chrome but still won’t in Safari.
After posting I also found that the PDFs weren’t scrollable on my mobile devices, only downloadable. This may be because my devices are very old…I get my son’s hand-me-downs when he upgrades!…so I had decided, as my brothers are rather elderly like me, they may encounter the same problem. To save them downloading, I had decided to replace the PDFs with an extra page of images which can be accessed (or not depending on the the user’s desire) by a link…the extra page then links back to the ancestor’s page. If PDFs are not scrollable on all mobile devices then this is a better option for the kids (the under 60s!) too…as I’m sure most of them will be accessing on their ever-present phones.
I’m not going to look into my computer’s problem further as the work-around is fine for me and maybe even a better option. I began working with computers in the late 1960s as a programmer. I began making websites in the 1990s and retired in the early 2010s just as it became essential that sites work on all devices. I was so thrilled to leave all that behind and now spend my days writing music, painting and playing with my cats. I’m so happy to leave all the current necessary IT knowledge to WordPress and am so very grateful that you provide this service.
Thank you again totoro and to all at WordPress for all you provide.
