PageSpeed Insights

I think somebody must fix these in PageSpeed Insights for Mobile and Desktop too:

    1. Performance – Diagnostics: Does not use passive listeners to improve scrolling performance (https://c0.wp.com/c/6.1.1/wp-includes/js/comment-reply.min.js)
2 Best Practise – Uses deprecated APIs – 1 warning found: Synchronous XMLHttpRequest on the main thread is deprecated because of its detrimental effects to the end user’s experience. For more help, check https://xhr.spec.whatwg.org/.
    2. SEO – Links are not crawlable: Search engines may use href attributes on links to crawl websites. Ensure that the href attribute of anchor elements links to an appropriate destination, so more pages of the site can be discovered ()

    Please see GTMetrix, too.

  • Hi… this may be a case where there are tradeoffs in performance vs features; we can pass this feedback along. Would you confirm whether you’re working with https://dancarageact62.wordpress.com/ ?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I confirm. This 3 appear for all posts, but not for Home.

  • Thanks. Many optimizations are done at the theme level. The theme you’re using for that site has been retired for several years now.

Would you like to try updating to something more current to see if the issues persist?

  • Unknown's avatar

Themes don’t change WordPress.com core (see first link). So if no one has time for such optimizations, tell me directly, don’t make me work for nothing.

P.S. If you want ‘to see if the issues persist’, please check any other WordPress.com site with any theme you want.

  • Hey there,

Happy to help you with this.

Generally in my experience, although useful – Pagespeed Insights can cause confusion with sites that are tested with it, and it’s down to how they test sites. I’d recommend this guide here: https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/v5/about which has more info on that.

The result of that confusion can be that Pagepeed Insights can deem a site problematic, when in reality it’s not.

I hope that insight is useful!

So if no one has time for such optimizations, tell me directly, don’t make me work for nothing.

A theme can call upon different core files in order to function. In any case, I’d recommend changing to a more up to date theme as suggested above.

I thought someone on Staff is happy when a warning was flagged by a user and checked it and then fix things.
“PageSpeed Insights (PSI) uses Lighthouse to analyze the given URL in a simulated environment for the Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO categories.” – is a phrase from the link you provided. And lately I’ve translated 2 strings for WordPress.com (Jetpack) that refer to “Lighthouse performance score”. (
Unfortunately I don’t understand: PSI and Lighthouse performance score are important for WordPress.com or not?

  • @dancarageact62 , thank you for the feedback. Our current themes use passive listening to improve scrolling performance. You’re welcome to switch if the tradeoff is worth it to you.
