Hi there!
When you registered your domain (e.g. yourgroovydomain.com) with WordPress.com, you purchased the right to use that domain name for a year. If you’d like to continue using it after the first year, you’ll need to renew it annually.
We strongly urge our users to renew their domains in a timely fashion because once they expire, it can be difficult to regain use of them.
Once a domain expires, it goes through a series of steps that make it increasingly difficult (and more expensive) to renew.
Note : Keep in mind that once your domain expires, it can be unavailable for up to 90 days. Once it goes back on the market, anyone can register it. You should never allow a domain to expire unless you are fully done with it and never want to use it again.
You can refer the below article for more details :
Hope this helps.
Thanks!

oh, but I meant if you pay 4.99 a month, buy your domain, but cancel the hosting, and your plan goes back to the free one, does your website get canceled?

If you register a custom domain on WordPress.com and later cancel it, your site will revert back to it’s free address (jacobmalik.wordpress.com) — all of the content and media will still be there.

We don’t provide the option to pay monthly and hosting is included in our free and paid plans. What is the address of the site you are asking about? Or was this more of a general question in case you decide to upgrade and then go back to the Free plan at some point?
