Paid Content

Hey there!
OK, so, I want to post a book, a story, in my wordpress site. My intention is to make access to the first part of the book completely free, and then charge (only once) for readers to gain access to the second part of the book. I don’t want them to have to pay a subscription or anything like that. Just a one time payment that gives access to the second part of a story that’s behind a paywall. Is there a way to do that?

Hi there,
If you’re on the Business or eCommerce plan, you should be able to install a plugin that extends your website with this sort of functionality.
Check out this article that can give you an idea of how to create a membership with lifetime access to certain pages.

There may be a number of different plugins that offer this sort of functionality, so you might have to do a little bit of tinkering around to see what works best with your website.

Hi there!
I’m just commenting again because I realized there was an easier way to do this, using the Premium Content block on the Gutenberg page editor.
All you would need to do is connect your Stripe account, and then you could have your users make a one-time payment to have access to a certain page or post.
Check out this link for a more detailed explanation: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/premium-content-block/#step-two-add-subscriber-content
I hope this helps!

Hi, Thomasjvu
Thank you very much for your answers. I’m just writing back to make sure I can do what I want to do before I start paying for a plan.
So, as I mentioned before, I want to post a book to wordpress. The intention is for each chapter to actually be a different post. The first posts, then, would be freely access, but there will come a point when I I’ll ask readers to make a one time payment to gain access to the rest of the story.
Now, I’ve seen the videos, and read the links you’ve provided. As far as I can tell, people can make a payment to become “subscribers”. What I’m not very clear on is whether once they’re subscribers, they’ll have access to any part of the site WITHOUT having to pay for access to each premium content block. I just want them to pay once, and to have access to the all the posts that are marked as premium content.
Is this possible?

Hi again,
I understand where your confusion arises, as it isn’t entirely clear in the documentation whether or not subscription access is on a per Premium Content block or on a per subscription plan basis. I just tested this out myself in order to confirm, and it seems like subscription access are on a per subscription plan basis.
Let me try to explain this in greater detail.
When creating a Premium Content block, you are allowed to create multiple different subscription plans, but you can only assign one of these subscription plans to each content block. Thus, when a user subscribes to a Premium Content block that has a certain subscription plan, they will have access to all Premium Content blocks using that subscription plan on your website.
For example:
If you create a Premium Content block and assign a new Subscription to it called “One-time” for users who make a one-time payment of $1, then any user who pays for that subscription will have access to any Premium Content block that also is assigned the “One-time” subscription.
Check out these screenshots for further reference, where the user has subscribed to the “One-time” Payment Plan.
Premium Content A: Has a “One-time” Subscription Plan

Premium Content B: Has the same Subscription Plan as Premium Content A

Premium Content C: Has a “Monthly” Payment Plan, different from A & B.

As shown, because the user subscribed to the “One-time” Subscription Plan, they are able to access both Premium Content A and Premium Content B as they are assigned the same “One-time” Subscription Plan.
Contrarily, because Premium Content C is assigned a different Subscription Plan, the user is not able to access it with their current subscription.
Sorry for the super long explanation, but I hope this was able to provide some clarity for you!

Hi, Thomasjvu,
Don’t worry about all the text, and thank you fro going through the trouble of testing things out. It helps out tremendously. I really needed to verify if I could that precisely that; subscription plans, as you put it.
A thousand thanks for your time!
