Paid Plan and Site Availability in the event of my death
-
Howdy!
I am interested in a paid account, but I want to make sure that if I perish in a fiery beer truck collision, that when my site is no longer being paid for that it won’t simply vanish. Will it instead just revert to a ‘free account’ (ads, etc) but remain visible for people to read even after I am no longer paying for it?

What is your reason for preferring a paid plan to a free one? Paid plans are great if you have a business you need to promote or if you’re selling things but perhaps unnecessary if you only have a “hobby” blog. Yes the underlying site with an address ending in .wordpress.com will still exist if you don’t renew an upgrade but features you used as part of that paid plan (a Premium theme or custom CSS for example) won’t and may break your site and will there be someone available to ensure the deactivated custom domain is no longer set as the primary one?
I’m quite happy with an address that ends in .wordpress.com. The only reason I can think of where a paid plan would benefit my site is the lack of annoying adverts. -
I’m fine with a WordPress address. I’d upgrade more because I do not want ads in my posts, and I want to be able to install plugins. Apparently, you cannot install plugins at all unless you upgrade to a paid plan. And I do not mind paying if it’s worth it, and can make maintaining my blog easier. Thanks for clarifying the issue for me. The blog will survive me as a plain “WordPress.org” address, if I fail to make a premium content payment.

Hi there!
To clarify a bit what’s been already said: to be able to install plugins, you would need plan Business, and it’s the only plan that could “break” your site when expired. The reason behind it is that when your site is downgraded back to free, the plugins will be removed from your site and so, anything on your site that was created using plugins may stop working.
If you let us know what exactly would you like to achieve on your site, we’ll see if there’s an alternative to plugins. With lower plans, downgrading to the free plan is usually seamless. Even if you were using a premium theme or some custom CSS, it would just revert to a free theme but the site should work just like before.
