paragaph formatting
-
I have become very frustrated with trying to get my paragraphs to stay in place when I upload my posts. Everything just runs together into one long blob. I am blogging as a potential writer, and the appearance of my posts is very important to me–most writers do know how to make paragraphs.
I have tried everything. I have re-entered the spaces and they jump back. I have added paragraph HTML and watched the space jump from one paragraph break to another and then a portion of my text disappeared.
I went to your FAQ section and found another option that was supposed to work. It had the HTML paragraph code with the characters ” between them. But when I tried that I ended up with about three blank spaces between my paragraphs.
Doen’t WordPress have something better to offer? I considered the upgrade, but when I looked into it I found no assurance that it would resolve this issue.

The characters I entered didn’t show up–in their place was a quotation mark. The characters were & n b s p ; without the spaces in between them.

What browser and version are you using?
Are you using Safari? The TinyMCE editor that wordpress uses for writing pages and posts is not fully compatible with Safari and you will find problems in other areas as well.
I would suggest downloading the Firefox or Camino or Flock browsers as they are the most compatible with wordpress.
Firefox: http://en.www.mozilla.com/en/
Camino: http://caminobrowser.org/
Flock: http://www.flock.com/Alternately, you can go to “my profile” in the upper right of your dashboard and uncheck “use visual rich text editor,” click “update profile and then you will be doing all your writing in code view. Some, including myself, find this a little confusing since in addition to the text of your post, you will see all the html code for your formatting.
Another alternative is to use an offline blog editor. Timethief has rounded up all the most popular editors and listed them on her wordpress resources blog at: http://wpbloggingtips.wordpress.com/2007/10/26/offline-blog-editors-reviews/

Oops offline editor reviews are now here: http://bloggingtips.tumblr.com/post/23496063 .

I just tried one more thing. At least it worked this time. I simply hit enter three times between the paragraphs. I got what I wanted.
My browser is Internet Explorer.
I had copied the code exactly as I found it in another persons post answering the same basic question. Here it is with space between everything to keep it from being interpreted as code here:
< p > & n b s p ; < / p >

Download Windows live writer or blog desk, they are both free offline blog editor and you won’t have any more issues.
IE5.5 and IE6 both have problems and although I’m not sure what has changed, IE7 and Firefox has also been having some random formatting problems where they were not before whatever happened, happened.

I have the same problem and I am running Safari and I don’t want to switch. Any suggestions?

There is a Safari “hack” that works pretty well, but the best thing for right now is to download and use Firefox as it is the most compatible when it comes to WordPress.
If you insist on using Safari, it will require a trip into the terminal program (Linux command line) to activating the debug menu so that you can then instruct Safari return Firefox on all browser calls.
-
The Safari/TinyMCE issue is the ONLY time WP really does suggest a switch. It’s not something people around here do lightly, I can tell you. You might want to try Camino if you don’t like Firefox.

I managed to fix that same problem. I fixed the blob when I copied all of my text and pasted it into Notepad, Windows’ super basic word processor. Then I formatted it properly from Notepad, and copied and pasted it back onto the WordPress page.
Worked like a charm. (If you need to do fancy stuff, queenbjan, I would suggest using Wordpad or putting it into Word AFTER you filter it through Notepad, the reason why I used Notepad was to get rid of any pesky formatting wordpress stuck in there.)
