  I dont always want a big gap between my lines. Is there any way to fix this?

  Do you mean when you press ‘Enter’ or ‘Return’ while writing?

  That will create a new paragraph, with spacing in between. For a single line without the extra spacing, hold down the SHIFT key while you press Enter/Return :)
