  I’m using this very nice theme called Parament, for my photoblog.
  There are some nice widgets which can be added to it.
  My question is this:

  How can I add a widget to the LEFT side of the screen?
  Seems to me that all widgets I want to add go by default to the right side of the screen, which means a lot of “real estate” space on my blog (left side) is not utilized at all.

  You can’t. The themes does not have a left hand sidbar. It has only a right one. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/parament/ You also may not be considering that what you consider to be empty real estate can probably only be viewed on widescreen monitors that have screen resolution higher than 1024×768 pixels and not on ones like mine which is 1024×768 pixels or on mobiles.
