parent page is not working as expected

I just learned that I could have a parent page, and I thought I followed the instructions, but even though the pages I marked to go under the parent page did disappear from the top of the homepage, they are not showing up under the parent page. If I go to manage pages I can find them, but this is not going to help my students when I tell them they can find the syllabus for their class under the parent page. As far as I can tell, they won’t have access to those pages now unless I give up on the idea of a parent page all together.

Anyone know what I’m doing wrong?

I want to add that I expected to be able to move the cursor over the parent page and a drop menu or something like that would appear. Maybe I just don’t know what it is supposed to look like…

Use the pages widget in your sidebar.

Well, I had that in the sidebar but it just listed all the pages in the same way–no distinction between parent page and the others. And I don’t see the point of having the page titles across the top and on the sidebar–so I thought I didn’t need both and I couldn’t figure out a way not to have them on the top, only the side. Anyway, perhaps I ought to change themes?

Or maybe I’m doing something wrong with the widget?

I’m assuming you’ve changed your theme since your wrote your above comment because I’m seeing the Dusk theme and the Child Pages (Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.) appear as bullets under the Parent Page (The Labyrinth House).
