Parsing my WP.com feed with perl – has stopped working. HELP!

  • Unknown's avatar

The feed URL for my WP.com blog works – i.e., I can go to it in a browser and see the XML.
I want to pull the most recent item via RSS, with a Perl script.
I have been able, in the past, to do this using the XML::FeedPP Perl module. But sometime around mid-Dec 2014, it stopped working. I don’t know if it was me (I upgraded to a new Mac server) or WP, but now, neither of the 2 Perl modules I have can access the feed.
I’m looking for help on the Perl side, but I also thought I’d look from the WP side. Can anyone suggest any ideas on how I can get this working?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Followup:
If I just pull raw content from the feed for my blog, I get an empty string.
But when I point my browser at it, I see lots of XML.
It’s almost as if WP.com notices the request is coming from a script rather than a browser and refuses to send anything back.

No, really; I need some help.

https://filsalustri.wordpress.com/ is now your URL as Staff have been implementing the more secure https:// across the platform. Perhaps that’s where the issue is arising from.

I tagged this thread for Staff assistance. It’s the weekend and they have a backlog so please be patient while waiting. Please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

Timethief, thanks for the heads up about https.
I just checked, and using https doesn’t fix it. I get exactly the same problem.
I *am* subscribed to this thread. I just thought someone would have gotten to it by now.

    Hi there,

We are looking into this. We’ll be back in touch as soon as we have something to report.

    Thanks for your patience.

In the future if your questions go unanswered for a day or so, it’s a good idea to add the “modlook” tag. Volunteers do a great job of catching the majority of questions, but some do fall through the cracks and adding the modlook tag ensures your request will be seen by staff.

    Lizthefair,
Thanks. I can appreciate that it takes time to dig into this stuff. I just wanted to know that someone had seen it.
Didn’t know about the modlook tag. Will remember for next time.

Here’s a little more info that may help diagnose the problem.
At http://cpansearch.perl.org/src/KAWASAKI/XML-FeedPP-0.43/lib/XML/FeedPP.pm you can see when the “Loading failed…” message happens.
The $method must be set, or I’d’ve gotten a different method. It should be set to ‘url’ cuz that’s what I’m passing to it.
Therefore, it appears that the parsehttp method in XML::TreePP is returning a bad value.
So the actual problem appears to be in XML::TreePP.
I do have the most current version of XML::TreePP.
That’s as far as I’ve gotten so far. Will add more if I find anything further.

    Hey there,

We took a look to make sure nothing changed on our end, and don’t see anything that could be causing the problem. Since the feed itself is valid, your best bet is to approach this from the Perl side of the equation.

    Good luck!

    Ok; thanks for trying.
