password-protect embedded links

  I want to embed a link in a webpage, that connects to a web file with additional information, but want to restrict access to that file, can I password-protect the link? I know I can password-protect any page on my site, but I am asking about links to other sites.

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  no a link can not be password protected at WordPress.COM – only Posts and Pages
