password protect entire site (w/out membership required)

new here, so i’m probably breaking all sorts of protocol with this question. i tried searching the forums and still haven’t found a definitive answer… that i’m happy with.

i want my blog to be for friends and family — a private blog. i want the entire thing to be password protected to avoid strangers from seeing content. the only solution i have found is to have my site-wide privacy settings on “private” with assigned users. however i don’t want to make my visitors have to sign up with wordpress in order to read my blog. i also don’t want to have to name allowed guests explicitly.

so to summarize, i want a non-member (friend) to visit my site and enter a password to gain access. please tell me that i’ve missed something obvious.

thanks for the patience and help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Can’t be done, sorry.
Everyone needs to be signed up.

You could create one ID and share that between everyone but comments would end up being mixed up..

well, that’s unfortunate. i guess i’ll have to use the single-user ID solution. kinda silly to make grandma register with WordPress.
