Password protected blog posts redirect to a 404 page. How can I fix this?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have not made any changes to my blog but since upgrading to v4.0 users can no longer access my password protected blog posts. It redirects to a 404 page. My understanding is that the wp-pass.php was phased out and replaced by wp-login?action=postpass… but that doesn’t help me because I cannot change the php files for my blog.

Please help, I am using this as a personal family blog to share only with other family members so if password protection doesn’t work then the whole blog doesn’t work for me.

    Thanks,
    Dylan

    Hi Dylan,

I’m not sure I understand, it appears your site southward4.com is self-hosted as its nameservers no longer point to WordPress.com.

This means you should now have access to all PHP files for your site. If you need help editing those files we recommend seeking support from the community at WordPress.org:

    https://wordpress.org/support/

I see you do still have some recent content here at southward4.wordpress.com though. On that site you’re currently the only user on the site granted access. You’ll need to invite your other family members to be users of the site to view anything in addition to giving them the password for password-protected content.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/#invite-people-to-view-your-private-blog

It appears you had one invited user previously, but that user’s records show it as no longer subscribed to southward4.wordpress.com. If that’s the source of this issue, I’d recommend inviting that user again, or creating a new user account whose password details are shared with your family.

    Best,

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply. Currently I have my own domain southward4.com pointed to southward4.wordpress.com. I have just now installed wordpress on southward4.com and I would like to transfer from WordPress.com to my self-hosted site. This will enable me to fix the login problem but it raises a few questions

    1. I have exported my site from WordPress.com so that i can import it to the new site at southward4.com. However, this does not include the photos uploaded to the site. Is there a way to download all these?

    2. I have a domain redirect setup and I need to cancel it. I don’t see any self-service option for doing that within settings. How do I do that? This will enable me to separate southward4.com from southward4.wordpress.com so that I can keep the later alive while trying to get the former working.

    Thanks,
    Dylan

    Hi Dylan,

    1. I have exported my site from WordPress.com so that i can import it to the new site at southward4.com. However, this does not include the photos uploaded to the site. Is there a way to download all these?

There is not currently a way to mass-download content out of the media library. Each item would need to be downloaded individually.

    2. I have a domain redirect setup and I need to cancel it. I don’t see any self-service option for doing that within settings. How do I do that? This will enable me to separate southward4.com from southward4.wordpress.com so that I can keep the later alive while trying to get the former working.

Two options here: first, you can choose to update your Primary Domain to the southward4.wordpress.com address. Since your southward4.com name servers will no longer point to WordPress.com that will not be an issue, but this change will keep southwrad4.wordpress.com from redirecting away.

Go to your My Domains page to update your primary domain:

    https://wordpress.com/my-domains/

This plus to this method is it leaves your Domain Mapping upgrade available through August 31, 2015 if you choose to point that domain back to WordPress.com later. The downside is that when the domain mapping expires, even when not in use, readers of southward4.wordpress.com will get an alert that domain mapping expired.

The alternative is that I can remove the domain mapping upgrade for you now, which means that error will not occur and you will not need to change any settings. However the upgrade is no longer refundable.

Let me know what you prefer.

    Best,

    -Alex G.
