password protected page

Hello! My password only works half the time for a password protected page that I created on my site. How can I fix this?

I don’t have a site linked to this WordPress.com account

  • Hi there,

Your site is not hosted with us on WordPress.com, but using the open source version of WordPress at another hosting provider, so our ability to help troubleshoot this is very limited.

Please ask for advice from the WordPress.org community instead in the forums linked above.

That said, is the issue perhaps that you enter the password the first time you go to the page, but the next time it doesn’t ask for the password, and the page is already loaded? If so, that’s entirely expected.

When you enter the password on a protected post or page, that sets a cookie in your browser that says you’re allowed to see the page. The WordPress software does this exactly so you don’t have to re-enter the password on every subsequent visit.

So until you either manually clear cookies or that cookie expires (I want to remember this particular one persists for 30 days, but don’t quote me on that), you won’t need to enter the password again in that particular browser. But if you accessed the site from a different browser, it should ask you for the password again.
