Password protected page

We have a page that is password protected BUT even after you type in the password, it does not go to the page. The page is called Members Only.
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there,
After entering the password, what are you seeing exactly?
Also, are you able to confirm the correct password is being added into the site?
-
After entering the password it just stays on the page that asks for a password. There is also a notation that you have to click on to accept cookies. I do that also and still nothing happens. If you click on “view the cookie policy” there is a blank page. I wish I could actually talk to someone and maybe walk someone through this. I would share the password so that you can actually see what happens.
BTW the password is correct

Hello there,
Many thanks for that extra information.
That does sound like odd behaviour you’re experiencing there. Can you tell me if you’re using any privacy extensions on the browser, or if you’re using any browser extensions?
Lastly, is are you using a VPN?
Many thanks in advance.
-
We are not using any privacy extensions or any browser extensions and we do not use a VPN. The strange thing is some people have no problem.
-
Since not everyone has this issue, it appears to be browser-related. What browser are you using to access that page?
-
The person having the problem uses Google Chrome. However, the person not having the problem also uses Google Chrome. I’ve tried using Microsoft Edge and it doesn’t work either. I have no problem because I administer the website so I can do anything.
-
Hi there, first please make sure that Chrome is up to date: https://www.google.com/chrome/update/
If it is, please ask them to do these two things:
1. Try clearing Chrome’s cache and cookies: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop
2. Try with all Chrome extensions temporarily disabled: https://support.google.com/chrome_webstore/answer/2664769?hl=en
Please let us know how each step goes and which version of Chrome they’re using if they’re still having trouble.
-
None of that worked. Chrome version 105.0.5195.127
I still suspect it may have something to do with cookies. When clicking on the cookie policy, this is what you get “automattic.com refused to connect.” Because you have to accept the cookies, I think that may be interfering…maybe?
It says that on all the other pages, but they aren’t password protected so I guess it doesn’t matter.

I’ve tried everything you suggested and nothing has worked. FYI, again some people using Google Chrome can access it while others can’t. Those who use Firefox have no trouble either.
-
Hi there,
I checked your Members Only page on my computer (Mac using Chrome v105.x)and for me it worked without issue.
Out of curiosity, if you open an incognito window in Chrome and attempt to visit and unlock the page with your password (in that window specifically) does it work as expected?
Thanks for the additional info!

Hi @lizthoms, go to File > New Incognito Window. Typically this gets rid of all the cookies and deactivates most of your extensions, just for that window, so it can be a handy way to troubleshoot.
Can you clarify a few things?
– Do you run into this issue yourself, or is someone else having trouble with it while most people are able to get in?
– If you’re seeing the issue yourself, would you be willing to set up a test password protected page and share the link and password here so we can try to duplicate the issue?

Since I am the administrator of the website and as long as I log into WordPress, I have no trouble. But if I just go to the website, I do. Again, I’m getting varied responses from people. Some have no problem using Google Chrome and some do. It’s very confusing. I have cleared out all cookies and history. I’ve never used other extensions. I have blocked third party cookies. If you like, I have no problem if you want to check this out yourself. Just go to trumbullcommunitywomen.org and go to the Members Only page. The password is tcwhappy. There really isn’t anything really sensitive on that page it just has information the rest of the world doesn’t need to see.

Hi again,
Just go to trumbullcommunitywomen.org and go to the Members Only page.
The issue here is that we’ve been testing at trumbullcommunitywomen.wordpress.com, which is the correct URL for your site. To clarify, it is not possible for free sites on WordPress.com to have a custom address (it requires an upgrade) but I see that your site is able to use either address, which I think is the issue here.
You are forwarding or “masking” your trumbullcommunitywomen.org through GoDaddy? This does allow you to see your site at that address, but it’s not a reliable way to connect a domain and can cause odd issues with your site. It can also be detrimental to your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and ranking with Google since they will think the same site exists on two URLs and may penalize you for having duplicate content.
If you upgrade to one of our plans however, and then connect the domain officially, this password will work. It also will work if you visit: https://trumbullcommunitywomen.wordpress.com/members-only/

Thanks. FYI, I’m really not too proficient in websites. The person who set it up many, many years ago is no longer with the club. Yes we do use GoDaddy. I’m not too clear on the terminology. What do you mean we have a custom address and what does “masking” mean? Was our site set up incorrectly?
-
Hi again,
To clarify, registrars like GoDaddy have a way on their end to make a site appear as if it’s using the custom address trumbullcommunitywomen.org
This is called ‘masking’ as it’s literally masking the fact that the underlying URL of the site is https://trumbullcommunitywomen.wordpress.com/
The issue is that this is not an actual connection to the site in the sense that it should not exist at two addresses as it does now. On our end, some services require that the address shown in the browser matches the true URL of the site in order to work.
It’s hard to say how sites will be affected by this, from the sound of it this site has existed for some time without incident. Without understanding the code in more detail, I could see however how a security process like this would not work correctly (a password) if the site is not showing at it’s true address.
Without knowing more about how the site came to be set up this way, I would just guess that your predecessor was unaware of the potential for issues. It does appear that in order to have working password protection for your site will require an upgrade though.
In this case you could consider our Personal plan, which would be sufficient to allow you to connect your domain from GoDaddy correctly. This would have the added benefit of turning off ads on your site, which is something we show on free sites to help pay our costs.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for your help. However I still don’t understand why some people have no problem while others do using the same browser.

However I still don’t understand why some people have no problem while others do using the same browser.
This is going to get a little long and complicated, but I’m going to do my best to try and clarify the issue.
The problem has to do with the cookie policy and how the previous owner set up this site using the domain “masking” as referenced above.
The domain
trumbullcommunitywomen.orgis using GoDaddy nameservers and the page set up on GoDaddy’s servers is setting aniframewhich loads the content fromtrumbullcommunitywomen.wordpress.com.The privacy and cookie request needs to be accepted on WordPress.com. Since the GoDaddy hosted page is loading a copy of the WordPress.com page, the click to accept cookies doesn’t register since the URL being visited is not hosted at WordPress.com.
You can see this for yourself by viewing the page source of your
trumbullcommunitywomen.orgwebsite.<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"><html><head><title>** Trumbull Community Women's Club **</title><meta name="description" content="Community-minded women working together to make a difference in the Trumbull, CT area and throughout the state." /><meta name="keywords" content="community service, women's club, organization, Connecticut Junior Women's Club, Trumbull, Tidy-Up Trumbull, Evening of Entertainment, caring, networking, play groups, Girls Night Out, socializing" /></head><frameset rows="100%,*" border="0"><frame src="http://www.trumbullcommunitywomen.wordpress.com" frameborder="0" /></frameset></html>While it looks like a lot of code, if it was an actual WordPress site, there would be hundreds of more lines of code than there is there now.
We aren’t able to overcome this problem because how your domain is set up is outside our scope of support. The easiest way to fix this would be to purchase one of our paid plans, then connect your domain and update your domain nameservers at GoDaddy to point to your site hosted here.
Then, visitors would be able to set that privacy cookie authorization properly and be able to access those password-protected areas of your site.
I hope that clarifies things.
