password protected page – password persists?

I have a page on a blog where users must put in a password. However, once the user inputs the password, they don’t seem to have to put it in again. This is fine for people on their personal computers, but what about if someone uses a public computer? I don’t want someone to be able to navigate to that page. How can I make that password non persistent when the browser is closed?

They need to log out of WordPress.com, not just close the browser.

I have a related dumb but simple question: How DOES one make a page password protected? I would like to make select pages of my archives password protected. Also, if the page is password protected, does that mean search engines won’t be able to find it? I would still like search engines to be able to find the articles.

We can’t answer technical questions without a link to the blog in question, starting with http.

I do not understand what is meant by logging out of WordPress.com. I do not see an option to log out of wordpress when viewing a blog.

@anneroo, that is because wordpress keeps the information in a cookie on the person’s computer. Once they have entered the password, they will not have to enter it again unless or until they clear their browser cookies. If they clear their browser cookies, then they will again have to enter the password to see the page.

@joannmillerwccae, in the admin (grey) bar at the top of the browser window when you are logged into wordpress, click on “my account” and at the bottom of that menu is “log out.”

I believe the cookie is the culprit in my case. I have viewers looking at the blog and give give them the password to view a page. Once they view the page then bring up the page again later they no longer have to use the password. So, it seems I will need to instruct viewers tomake sure the cookie browser is cleared, correct?

Deleting the cookie was the trick. However, I cannot seem to find a way to automatically delete the cookie once a viewer leaves the blog. I’ve included instructions for deleting the cookie but not all my viewers are computer savvy. Any suggestions. wccae4u.wordpress.com

So just because I can see my password protected post, not everyone in the world can?! I about had a freak-out just now!

That is correct, not all viewers will delete the cookie once they leave the blog, and there’s really not much you can do to control that.
