password protected page still going blank

  • Unknown's avatar

    I know others have posted about the problem. When a user accesses a password protected page, they enter the password, and all they get is a blank page. If I log out as the admin of the site and click on the login, I am not required to enter a password at all, and I get all of the content. This is a nightmare to troubleshoot!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

    Can you please share a link to that password protected page so I can have a look?

  • Unknown's avatar

    thank you. It’s sea-trek.com

    In the upper right corner, there is a link in the menu called Licensee Resources, which should go to the pw protected page, https://www.sea-trek.com/licensee-2/

    I’ve seen this issue in forums but no solve. I’m also not a coder, which probably doesn’t help.

    thank you!

    password = [redacted]
    I reset it, hoping to get some help

  • That is a self-hosted WordPress.org site, which we really can’t help with here.

    To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    @terriebari,

    Please note that the password that you provided above is now publicly available to anyone that visits this page, not just staff.

    I used the link you provided to visit the Licensee page while logged into my account on Firefox. It showed as password protected, and the password you provided opened the page. It wasn’t a blank page.

    If I log out as the admin of the site and click on the login, I am not required to enter a password at all, and I get all of the content.

    I haven’t tried logging out of my account on the browser that I accessed your password protected page with, but what you describe might be due to caching. Passwords and other info may be saved on a browser, depending upon settings, after logging out, unless the browser cache and cookies are cleared.

    However, oddly I was able to see the protected content of the page on an alternate browser without logging into a WordPress.com account.

    @staff,

    Please note the password provided by @terriebari above.

  • @musicdoc1, thanks for pointing it out. However, it looks like that’s a password the OP created especially to allow us to test this. I’ve redacted it nonetheless.

    I haven’t tried logging out of my account on the browser that I accessed your password protected page with

    As this is a self-hosted site, the OP was likely referring to their admin account for that site, rather than a WordPress.com account. Whether or not you’re logged into a WordPress.com account won’t have any effect on what you can or can’t see on a self-hosted site, with the exception of Like buttons added by Jetpack.

    @kokkieh,

    Whether or not you’re logged into a WordPress.com account won’t have any effect on what you can or can’t see on a self-hosted site

    That’s right, I should have recognized that. Thanks, chief. : )

    So my tests essentially revealed the following:
    1. Either the behavior is different on Firefox (password necessary) vs. Google Chrome (password unnecessary), or
    2. Maybe it opened without the password on Google Chrome because of the previous visit on Firefox, for some reason. For example, perhaps it recognized my public IP.

    Hi All
    Thanks for trying to help. I did indeed set up this page just for testing and there is no security issue . The entire world is welcome to the pw

    The password definitely gets stored based on ip. even using incognito window will open the page, if the pw has been used to access.

    Still no solve, though. The page just opens blank in Chrome. I was not able to access in Firefox, either, but it’s interesting that it worked for someone here.

    I don’t understand one thing you’ve been writing: “the op has a self-hosted site”. The site his hosted by bluehost.

    thanks

    You’ve been posting into the support forum for sites hosted at WordPress.com such as https://wannawork.wordpress.com/
    Your other site is hosted at Bluehost not here at WordPress.com and is using the WordPress.org software where things often work differently to here. The correct support forum for your site was provided by staff-blorbo higher up this thread.
