password protected posts and email followers

Could you advise whether email followers will get the full text of a post irrespective of an applied password protection code?

I have read the advice on membership type sites, but wonder whether a “common” password (i.e. used again for all new posts) would enable some user feedback to be gathered before they are given a password.

    thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Good morning –

    Thanks for getting in touch.

When a public post is published, email followers will see your post in the actual email notification that is sent out.

Adding a password to the post will (I think – but I need to test it) result in just the post title being emailed out. Password protected posts still publish to your blog page with other posts, but only the title is visible. When someone clicks on the title to open the post they’d be prompted to enter the password.

    Thanks

Yes, I’ve just tried it and it is thus not a possible workaround! I don’t want to have to go to wordpress.org; are there any other means of establishing a privacy wall for a part of the site? I don’t want the formality of a community site where people could be contributors, just that they need to provide some information before being issued with a password or the means of access.

I was wondering whether open posts could be accessed from within a menu that can only be seen from a password-protected zone?

  • Hi there,

Unfortunately, you cannot make some parts of your WordPress.com site password protected. For that functionality a self-hosted WordPress site might be a better option.

Hi there, hope you don’t mind me adding something here.

    You said

Have you considered using a specialized contact form on a Public site to gather such information before inviting a visitor access to a 2nd, related Private site? When you invite the user to the Private site, you can assign that person the user role of Viewer, which only allows them to read the Private site and post comments. https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#adding-viewers-to-a-private-site If for some reason you need to remove that user from the Private site, there is a means to do so and they will not be able to access the Private site once removed.

Just to be clear, site owners don’t set up accounts for new users here on WordPress.com. The user creates their own account and password.

So this is like the arrangement for a “membership” site as described in this tutorial. https://en.support.wordpress.com/tutorials/build-a-membership-website-tutorial/ I just wanted to make sure to highlight the salient points. This set up is also ideal if you want to set up a subscription service. You can post an occasional “teaser” on the Public site and then provide the full article or more articles on the Private, paid subscription site.

Hope that helps somewhat. Let us know if you have any other questions about this.

  • Reading this thread, I was going to recommend something very similar to what @justjennifer recommended. Let folks have their own login information for a second, fully private site.

Or, you can have fully private posts on a public site, or have a section of password protected posts.

You just wouldn’t be able to share the password in the post that password is protecting. You’d need to get it out in another post or in some other way.

    I hope that helps!
