Password protected posts/safe?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Are password protected posts safe and secure? I had a password protected post (I have removed it this morning because of this querey) and in my stats it says someone has clicked “Support.wordpress.com” and then “hints to password protected posts”..certain posts i have password protected because i thought they were secure. Is it possible that someone can get hints that will give them the password?..Surely this would be wrong?..You do a great job here answering these questions and i’m still very new so appreciate the help you give….http://talakachina.wordpress.com

    arbie20 Are you asking me to reply?? i’m not sure what you mean by how do you create a password…you just make up a word…if you mean how do you add a password then i can tell you that haha…When you write your post, on the right of the page click on edit next to “Visibility:Public” tick password protected, then click OK, then type in password, then click OK…

    @talakachina
    Password protected posts are only secure enough by the measures you
    take like creating a hard to figure out password & how well you trust
    the person that you gave the password to.

    you can change the post password anytime you feel like it for example
    you gave someone the password to view the post but they gave it to their
    friends you can change the password to lock them out but it will also lock
    out everyone else you gave the password to so you would need re giveout the
    password to the readers you trust.

    teck07…thank you so much for that reply…so if i have a really hard to figure out password then no-one would be given hints?? That was my worry, that someone could be given hints as to what the password was and so enable them to figure it out, which defies the purpose of passwords.It wasn’t one of my friends, it was someone trying to get the password without my permission. But i’m happy with the answer you gave me. Thank you.

    Remember, too, that if someone goes to your blog and clicks on a password-protected post, it counts as a hit. You don’t need to worry that they’ve read it if you’ve got a secure password, but seeing the hit can freak you out a bit if you don’t know that.

    If someone tries to make a thread in this forum about how to guess passwords, staff would kill it faster than you can imagine.

    raincoaster thank you…it was the fact it showed in my stats in the URL on my page that someone had typed in “hints for password to password protected posts” so i figured someone was trying to gain access to my password. Thank you so much for saying staff here would not allow it. You have put my mind at rest. I will go back to adding passwords now without worry. Thank you.
