Password Protected Site
-
I have built a free wordpress.com site to show my resume as I am looking for a new job. I don’t want the home page or 3 other pages to be public to the world. I was wanting to include my site on my resume/cover letter with a password. However, it seems if I make my site private I have to know an email to invite a user or the viewer would already need to have a WordPress account. Is there any way around this?
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

I know I can set a password on each page but if I use the same password for all 3 pages do they have to enter it each time they switch pages?

Hello there @ktchason288269260!
This is a really creative approach for sharing your work, and resumé!With password-protected pages, the content on the page – for example any images, etcetera, can be directly accessed, by anyone that receives the page and may share a link to a resource on the page.
Each page will need a password, but you you are not restricted from reusing the same password for all three, though, yes, this would need to be re-entered each time the page is accessed for the first time by someone you send it to. In the same cookie session, they will be able to return to the opened (password entered) page.
For a streamlined approach, you can consider using a Details Block or a URL anchor to highlight another area on the same page, so that the person receiving the page link only reviews one page, but that page has different areas to explore.
I hope this has been helpful, but feel free to reach out if you have any further questions!

Thanks for the reply.
I did think about doing it all on 1 page but it’s just so much scrolling.
I’m not sure what you mean by “password-protected pages, the content on the page – for example any images, etcetera, can be directly accessed, by anyone that receives the page and may share a link to a resource on the page.” Does this mean even though it’s password protected if they have the password and they then access the site they could copy-paste info from that site? If so, I’m ok with that. The only people who would see this are those that already have my resume and the info anyway I’m just trying to show I have WordPress experience as well.
Are there options if I pay for a site on wordpress.com via plugin that I could just password protect the whole site without having to require users?

Hey there,
Thanks for reaching back out!

Yes, that’s correct, but with moving between page to page, the password need to be entered.

Of course, so this plugin here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/password-protected/ may help fulfils what you’re looking for. It would lock the site down to a single password.
There are other similar plugins here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/password%20protect%20site/
These plugins would require the WordPress.com Business plan:
Using plugins, generally speaking does take that WordPress experience to the next level. :)
I hope this helps.

So I moved all data to the home page so it’s all on 1 page and used the details blocks as suggested above but now it seems I can’t password protect the homepage; only other pages I create.

Hi Karen, I noticed you ended up deleting your blog. Will you be willing to try again? It sounds like you wanted your website to be able to share your CV and resume, but you didn’t want it to be public. You’ve tried setting a password for each page, but that didn’t work out for your homepage. We could try and see what was happening, but we would need the blog restored for that.
There’s also another option to have your site semi-private: you can discourage the search engines from indexing it. That way, nobody will be able to find the site on Google; they would need the exact URL to open it. So if you send the link to a potential employer, they could access and read your pages, but nobody would find it by accident on a search engine.

Hi there! Yes, after days and hours trying to get it to work I gave up. I didn’t want people to have to enter a password for each page so I put everything on homepage. But then I couldn’t password protect the homepage like I could regular pages.
I don’t want to pay as this is hopefully temporary while I’m job searching.
I didn’t want to use my wordpress.org hosted site either as I want to keep my blog and personal resume separate.

Hey there,
Ok thanks for that information.
Out of curiosity, why are you looking to password protect your resume? What’s the context behind that? (I’m just curious as you don’t usually see that…)
We can restore the site and help you get set up if you wish, cost effectively.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Because it is none of the world’s business to see the history of where I currently work, where I’ve worked for 20+ years and what my job duties were, and where I graduated college, and where I volunteer, and on and on. That info is for me and a future employer. If having a website makes it easier for them to view, read, and pass along my resume then I want one. But I don’t want the entire world to view it either.

Hey there,
Thank you for that information, and I suspected the answer would be along those lines. :)

So you can make a site public, but you can activate Discourage Search Engines from Crawling the site, and how to do this can be seen here.
This means, that only those with the link can see the site – (these being future employers, whereby the site URL is only shared via private correspondence).
This feature was put in place specifically for these kind of use cases.
If I may, if you’re looking to send this URL to future employers, it may be easier for the recipient to view the site this way. They’d only have to click a link and wouldn’t have to negotiate a password – which is an extra barrier to viewing your capabilities as an employee.
You also wouldn’t require a WordPress.com Business plan in this instance, but at a minimum you may want the WordPress.com Personal Plan ( https://wordpress.com/pricing ) if you decided to use a custom domain. (I’m mentioning this, as usually people use a personal domain when it comes to sharing resumes…etc.)
If you wish, I can still restore the site for you, if you wish – and you can totally achieve what you’re looking to do, as outlined above. :)
