password protecting a page

I am trying to password protect a page, but when the page displays it says “Protected: the title of the page and then the contents. The only difference between a public page and a password protected page is that it says Protected before the page title.

Try clearing your browser cache after logging out – some browsers hang onto cookies for a long time. Had some issues like that with my site the first time I did a password protected Post
Also make a test password protected page (or Post) (junk data) that you think still shows the secret contents and post the link here – then someone can visit your site and see if things are behaving correctly

I tried that, it worked, published, went back 3 of the 4 pages were password protected (4 were set up that way) went back in an hour later and found that all the pages which I password protected were public. Now at wits end and have to trash pages. The risk is too great, it is intellectual capital.
