password protecting a page

  I am trying to make a page private by password protecting it. As far as I can tell I have followed all the steps to do so, and clicked on Publish (several times in fact) but the password box does not appear on the relevant page. It did yesterday, but then disappeared overnight. How can I gat this to work ?
